New to the area and I'm looking for a lake or river to fish this week near Ketchum. Is it too early for Alturas Lake? Would I have better luck somewhere else?
I'm don't fly fish (yet), so am looking for something basic to just relax and put my stick in the water for a few hours with a decent chance at catching something while I have a beer or two.
Not looking for any trophy fish, just a trout I can take home for dinner.
Any advice on the area?

I wish I could help. I don't know anything about Alturas. The Ketchum area is a trout only effort. Warm springs used to be good but I don't know what the run off is doing for water clarity. Ron

Even though you don't fly fish, you might check with the fly shops in Ketchum for some ideas on where to go.
Check the regulations.....I think that the Big Wood River and its tributaries is closed.
There are a few small lakes in the area. The two that I can think of off hand are Penny Lk & Dollar Lk in the Ketchum area. Lava Lk and Carey Lk (warm water species) in the Carey area.
I don't know on Alturas Lk, but again -- check at the shops in Stanley.

Alturas, last I checked (Saturday) was still most entirely frozen over. Petit lake however is free of ice, as is most of Redfish. However, trout stocking hasn't started. Not sure how you might do. I saw a local fishing Redfish last week at the inlet, don't think he caught anything though.

In addition to the stuff already mentioned, Little Wood Res and Magic Res are fairly close to Ketchum. I'd guess about 45 minutes or so. Both have prospects for trout.
