Reels
#1
Hi all it has been awhile, but I'm back for some more fun and adventures.

Now about reels. I'm looking for a replacement for my Quantum Catalyst PTi20. As much as I have loved this reel, sending it in every 2 years for a rebuild is out of the question.

So I would like some in put on what is out there that is working for you. Keep in mind it will be fishing 2 to 3 times a week. Price is an object. With that said I'm willing to pay for quality,

What I'm looking for is a reel with simular specs as the PTi. Capeable of handling larger fish, but keeping it light. If I want to go big I'll add my Penn 409 to the rod LOL.

Well boys and girls any in put would be greatly appreciated

I don't know how it compares with the Quantum Catalyst PTi20 (they still make those?) But, I love my Pflueger President Reels.

Cabela's had them for $20 off back in march so I bought 2 for $80 and walked to wallmart and priced matched them so didn't spend any gas money to get them Ha Ha.

I'm going to pick up the Quantum EXO Pti 30 this week. It's a bit pricy at 2 bills, but super light and very well machined. The Smoke is slightly heavier but still a very well made reel at $150.00. I'm just glad Quantum answered the lightweight trend! I have always been a fan of Quantum. The Shimano Ci4 is another great light spinning reel, just not as cool looking as the EXO.[cool]

I also fish the Pflueger President Reels, but also have the Cabela's Salt Strikers in all of the sizes. The smallest one is tiny. I haven't figured out the whole balance thing and currently have it on an ultralight rod with two pound test to cast the lightest lures. The big ones are huge and bigger might be more reliable for anyone choosing just one reel for preparedness. You might catch less smaller fish, but the tackle should last. They might have durability advantages and I will fish in oceans when I escape future harsh times or Zombies in my future sailboat. The older Salt Strikers don't have that little lever that lets it turn backwards which seems useful to remove seaweed from lures, but mainly because I've been doing that with the Pflueger President Reels. How important is that feature?

I also have huge Diawa spinning reels made for casting long distance and fighting big fish. I've tried one on my surf casting rod and I'm sure it should do well once I learn how to surf cast.

The Pflueger Supreme XT for 119.00 on sale right now at cabelas is going to be hard to beat in the light weight quality reel. They are usually 149-159.

Pflueger sure builds a great reel. You wont find any negative reviews about them. I used to be a die hard Shimano fan, but then I was introduced to Daiwa and sold all my Shimano stuff almost instantly. I'm mainly talking bait casting reels, since thats what I use 90% of the time.

I've owned several Quantum reels and personally wouldnt buy anything quantum again. They come up with some hot new reel every couple years and it turns out to be garbage. Maybe now these EXO & Smoke reels will be different.

If you are going for a spinning reel I would really stick to Pflueger, Shimano or Daiwa only.

You also get what you pay for. Try and stick to reels above the $50 price range. I dont thing you have to spend over about $100-$120 for spinning reel. I've owned more than a few and there is hardly any difference other than some extra bling or some magnesium parts to make it lightweight.

Go look at the Pflueger MGX. About the best reel you can get for $100 IMO

I've had pretty good luck with my president also and was considering replacing the Quantum with that.
Also I have a Okuma that I like but it's a light weight that I use on my ultra light rod. Not sure if it will transfer if I go bigger.

Thanks for the reply.....BTW the reels you buy at Walmart are not the same as you can buy at Cabelas or Sportsmens. Even if they are the same model, it's a Walmart thing.

Ten years fishing on a Quantum reel and only getting about 18 months out of them before they go down. I think it's time to move on for me. I love how smooth they are and just about everything else about them. Mine just have not been durable, and it's the same item that fails. The anti-reverse. When it starts going out the handle gets hard to crank until it just wont move at all. Sucks big time when you are in a battle with a big fish. Thanks for your suggestion and taking the time to post.

[#0000FF]I too like the Presidents but most of my reels are Okumas. And I use the small size 10...with 6# line...for almost everything. I do use 20s and 30s for heavier catfishing...with 8 or 10 pound main line.

I keep them cleaned and lubed and they keep on bringing in the fishies...even those big ugly carp you like to play with.

How are they different? I've bought the same reel from both places, and cannot notice any difference, other than the package it came in. The walmart comes in a blister pack, and the sportsman's comes in a box. That is the only difference that I noticed.

+1 on the symetre. I've been pretty impressed with these guys. There's a couple of different sizes and I've been happy with each of them. I do prefer a rear drag but that's personal preference. To be fair though, I haven't fished many other brands to compare but then again, I haven't needed to. Like has been said, those shimanos are tough!

The only difference that I know of between walmart and say sportsmans pfluger reels other than packaging, is walmart buys the product that didnt quite make company standards and was put on wholesale due to some minor flaw. It could be some thing that prolly will not affect performance at all to somthing that may cause reliability issues. Its generally just a cosmetic flaw of.some sort.

I've had really good luck with Okuma and Shimano reels. I've landed multiple species with the Okuma Epixor EF-25B and Okuma Avenger AV-30B. I also love my Shimano Symetre and Shimano Sedonas. The Shimanos don't have as many ball bearings as the Okumas, but they are still high quality and run smooth. I make sure I clean them every other trip and lubricate them once or twice a year.

Kind of depends on who you ask. Walmart has a policy of pricing. If you cannot make their price your product will not appear on their shelves.
So what happens is they either get seconds, a lower grade of manufacture, or different specs for that product. I have a friend who works for Castrol. He told me not to buy my oil at Walmart as it is "different" from what I will get at a parts house. That was all he would say. But when I was looking for a flat screen Walmart had some of the best prices. When checking to model numbers, they were only available at Walmart. Special made at a lower grade to offer the lowest price. Not saying they are bad just different. And the old adage you get what you pay for truly applies here.

So for me when buying rods or reels I'll stick with the companies that specialize in them. I fish a lot and am not always gentle on my equipment. As TD knows I like to target large carp on ultra light tackle. Thats also true for wipers just too much fun on light gear.

Thanks jeremy I agree with you said. But I am hard on reels for some reason. For me buying Walmart is not an option. They charge the same price for a factory second. I'll stick with either an online order from a company I trust or buy from a local sports store.

[#0000FF]You would lose that bet. I was buying Okumas before he repped for them. And I never did buy anything through him...before his relationship ended.

I've noticed that they are now whoring themselves out like a lot of other reel companies...making reels cheaper and worser just to capture the market of folks who buy on price alone. Haven't bought a new one for several years. But then, I already have about 20 or so.

I have had a couple of local BFTers bring their fairly new Okumas by my place for life support service. Amazing how cheap and flimsy some of their new models are. You can't tell by looking at them from the outside but once you get inside the cover it is scary. Most of them would never hold up to a master carper like yourself.

Hey I loose so many bets I get free invites to Wendover!

Guess I'm going to have to learn how to post here again. I see (well didn't see) the picture I tried posting. Must be that inline thing. I'll try again without it.

My Okuma is about 7 years old and is as smooth and reliable as the day I bought it. I even think you recomended that I get one back then. But alass my memory isn't what it use to be.
