I've always made an effort to keep sunscreen, bug spray, tobacco etc away from lures and flies. I have a streamer box full of flies that got doused in sunscreen last year I thought I would have to chuck in the trash. You can smell the flies from 5 feet away. I used a few yesterday carp fishing and guess what? The fish didn't care a bit! Carp are supposed to have an exceptional sense of taste and smell. Anyone had a lure get contaminated and not work, or is it amyth like bringing bananas in the boat?

Maybe they like coconut? LoL!
I've always heard the same thing.
But, I smoke, and smoke while I fish. I'm anti-west nile virus, so I wear bug spray. I try not to get any spray on my hands, but I'm sure some ends up there.
My experience is that when the fish are biting, they don't seem to care much. But, it's not like I hose down my tackle box with deet, either.

Interesting article. Thanks for the link. I'm still picturing the fishing guide trying to explain why the tube of Prep-h is in his fishing bag! Maybe No-Ad spf15 is some kind of miracle fish attractant, but I'm holding off on a full endorsement for now.

I think it has more to do with getting the human smell off the bait. Had an old guy in Hagerman tell me that years ago when he was teaching me about sturgeon. He also said "He who gathers the bait off the screens catches the most fish"

I fished with a guide that had been guiding for 20 years and the plastic that I was using got torn up and he super glued it back together and told me to go back to fishing. I said "dont they smell that?" and he said "it doesn't seem to bother them" needless to say I caught another fish right after that.

I do believe fish can smell, and I too "USE" to smoke and always caught more fish than anyone with me, so I assumed they liked tobacco. Anise oil (licorice) is a good cover up so is vanilla.
As far as Carp not interested, I fish for Carp almost every day. They are not interested in my flies the last few days. I am not a biologist at all and the way they are swimming together, jumping out of the water, I assumed they were in spawn mode and during that time it is tough to get them to hit. I still catch them, but I truly have to work for it.

I've been going through a whole lot of glue lately! The more "chewed and glued" they get, the better they're working!
As for the banana "myth", that's as FACT as anything in fishing. You can put whatever you want on your fly or lure, but don't EVER bring the banana on my boat or we're doomed. Never.
