UL with KSL Outdoors
#1
We were out on the Utah lake today with three paraplegic kids in wheelchairs and Adam Eakle from KSL Outdoors and Tonya Kieffer from DWR.
It is always a touching and remarkable thing to see the Smile on a kids face as they catch their first fish, take their first boat ride or feel the spray of water on their faces as the boat crosses the lake. When a camera crew is there to share it with the world it is even more touching.
The show will air this Saturday night at 11:00 on channel 5. If you can stay up that late....watch it.

Oh, Mike and Tonya, I hope to meet you guys some time! You seem like such great people.

Some of those pics look like the youngsters are not paraplegic, but have muscular dystrophy or cerebral palsy like my kid. It's so hard to help them do that stuff when they can barely use their hands and can often barely see. You certainly put.in a lot of effort.

As a parent of a special needs child, I know how much work this is, and how much FUN it is, too. My "Trophy Kid", Rachel, loves to do ANYTHING, and fishing is a favorite. I have a special 10' super lightweight cane pole for her. Only one of here hands works well, so reeling is tough. But, boy! Does she love to set the hook!

You're saints, and same to everyone involved. Thanks.

Springbuck,
Freedoms Dream, the boat and Hand in Hand Outdoors, the non profit was formed to serve kids like your daughter. It is HER BOAT, built for her and the others we strive to help. Please contact us and arrange for a time to bring her and her cane pole aboard. There is never a charge for what we do. It is our way to share our love for the water and fishing and a way to say thank you to our veterans and Wounded Warriors.

Adam will air a story about us tonight on KSL Outdoors with Adam Eakle at 11:00PM tonight and replayed Sunday at 4:00PM.
And you are right some of the kids are affected by disease and not accidents and they are not all kids, but I am an old man and everyone (almost) is a kid to me.

Go to the web page and contact us and I or someone on the staff will contact you.

Thank you. We do what we can and hope that in a small way we can brighten someone's day and open a door to the wonderful world of fishing and enjoying the outdoors.
What I need now is some guidance where we can catch more fish for these kids. Anyone have any advice, locations, baits, techniques? I believed I could catch fish any day on the lake, but it has been a struggle.

Tonya is indeed a keeper. She has single handedly introduced more children to fishing than all of the others in the state combined. She is involved with so many fishing projects for children that I couldn't begin to list them.
I was fortunate enough to assist her with her casting clinic at Provo Boat Harbor where we taught approximately 1,000 fourth graders to cast over a 3 week period plus she heads up the community ponds fishing.................She is truly something with an effervescent bubbly personality and very easy on the eye.
She is back East in Ohio for a few days visited her grandmother who was in an automobile accident and chasing walleye in Lake Erie.

[#0000FF]As you know, I tossed my (fishing) hat into the ring...errr boat...when you first let me know of your project. I am always open to assist in any way I can.

PM me your mailing address and I will get you a couple of copies of my book, with maps, etc. Then if you would like we can make a circuit of the lake together and I can download whatever I think I know...or can remember.

I have always had a special soft spot for helping kids with fishing. Ditto for older folks with challenges.

Glad to see you are off to a good start.

Now if we can just keep Mama Nature on her meds.

Is that ever appreciated. One would think that after 50 years of being a fisherman it would be an easy matter to find a few catfish and white bass at any given moment.................Not so or at least not recently.

The big boat limits my ability to get into some waters and she is not a perfect fit for some techniques such as bottom bouncing at 1MPH or slowly working structure while casting for largemouth, but she is a great platform for soaking a bait or midwater trolling. I just haven't been able to find the fish with any consistency. Maybe that just fishing...........But when I have these kids aboard they expect action whether its carp, white bass or cat fish. With your help I know we'll get it down. THANKS AGAIN!!! PM on the way

[#0000FF]If it is any consolation, the fishing on "golden pond" has not been consistent or stellar so far this year. The low water last year had some affect on the white bass numbers...and sizes...and the prolonged ice cap also took a toll (winter kill) in some of the shallower areas. Prospects for a heavy harvest of large white bass are slim. But there should be a lot of the smaller ones showing up soon...if the weather would stabilize for more than one day at a time.

Catfish are abundant in many areas. They should provide a consistent fishery through the summer. But with lower water they can be in different places than our first guess.

I have fished that lake for several decades my own self and I should be able to figure it out better. But I still have to look for the fish on almost every trip. And I still learn new things almost every day on the water. That's what keeps it interesting I guess.

As I tell folks...I don't know all the answers but I have sure learned most of the questions.
