Mohave 5-18-13

That place still kicks my butt! I guess whatever it takes to get on them down there I don't do well. At least the south end. I have done ok on the north end and up into the river a few times. Launched out of Katherines for something different to do plus there was a tourney launching out of Cottonwood. In the end the tourney would of been much easier to deal with. DAM there is a lot of boats out of Katherines. Had the place to myself when we launched but coming back was a whole huge ball of fun. Besides the 100% all boats safety check/inspection/DUI checkpoint going into the harbor. That had everything reallllly backed up.

Caught less than a dozen and worked HARD for them. They are still on beds down there. The water is colder than Echo by a bunch. Only caught 2 large mouths and both of them were still hanging out with their fry. Took 30 or so minutes on each to finally get them to bite. Threw the whole boat at them and in the end it wasn't plastic that would get their attention it was a jerk bait. I guess with the fry swimming around that jerk bait coming along looked like something that would eat them and their protective nature took over to protect. The rest of the fish were smallies. I caught nothing Texas rigged today which I do really well with on Lake Mead. Jerk baits, squarebills, swimming a grub and drop shotting was it.

The best fish of the day was a really nice male small mouth. He was still protecting the eggs and on the bed hard. Took more than 30 minutes of throwing everything and just as I am calling it time to move on I made one last try with a drop shot worm and finally got him.

Life of being the "non" driver...

A decent LMB, caught on a jerkbait.

The most colorful small mouth I have caught to date.

And... Other than catching the smallie above this was the excitement of the day...

Haven't messed with one of these in a few years... Something I use to catch, mess with and typically eventually kill in Montana growing up but haven't seen one in Nevada since I moved here 6 years ago. I think this one is called a Twin-Spotted rattlesnake. At least going off these pictures and looking online for a couple minutes what I think it is called. Small snake. 2 feet at best. Plenty of rattles on it so thinking 4-5 years old maybe. Turned it loose to continue its voyage across the cove we were in. Just wanted to get some pictures and a chance for Madi to see what a rattlesnake looks like.

[shocked] wow a rattlesnake?! what a catch lol. we came across one out at crawdad cove over spring break. just heard it rattle but never located it cause I had to hurry back to the camp site cause of inconsiderate people invading our camp site.

nice fish too. I have been wanting to get down to Mohave and give it a go from shore. whats the driving time to get out there? [fishon]

I live in the very NW end of town (near the bigggg gun range). 90 miles to Cottonwood Cove on the NW end of the lake near the river entrance and 120 miles to Katherines Landing on the SE end of the lake. There is quite a bit of shore access on the SE end but the crowds are fairly insane and more or less none of them are there to fish. Not sure about shore fishing access on the NW end of the lake never paid attention to it from the boat. There is also access to the SW end of the lake too. I think that area is more of a beach like area verse anything else. Seen it from the water but never went over there to explore.

A good portion of the drive the speed limit is 75.
