Call me Crazy...

I actually ate a carp out of Utah lake and yes I am well aware of the PCB advisory. He was absolutely delicious. Filleted then Marinated in Soy sauce and garlic salt then battered in Fried chicken batter and deep fried.Yummy! Lots of bones though I was fly fishing and always wanted to try one so I kept a little one. Surprisingly tasty not sure if those people who say they taste like mud have even tried one.

Not that surprising !! What is more surprising is that we, the US, is the only country in the world that does not utilize carp as a major source of protein. Properly prepared, they are not only good to eat, but a source of high quality protein. If you learn to prepare properly by removing the red flesh on the skin side, then scoring the fillet so the heat and steam can reach all the small bones, they are very good. While Utah Lake Carp are plentiful, try one out of Deer Creek, Starvation, Flaming Gorge, or Lake Powell. Same with suckers, just make sure it is not a Junie !!!

Not crazy, I have eaten carp too. It isn't bad at all. The main problem is the bones. Carp have pretty much the same bone structure as northern pike. They can be a pain to fillet out or you can eat around them.

I wouldn't worry about the PCBs. The amount is very small and is mostly in the guts and fat on the older larger fish. So choose a younger one and trim off the red meat and belly flaps. Utah Lake is not a highly polluted lake. It is just silty.

Glad to hear it. Will be curious to know how it turns out for ya.

Had a chance to stop by the Logan river on the way home. After snagging into a carp, thought I was onto some "other" browns. But lo and behold - I hooked into a brown, but it was of the slurpy lipped kind, and NOT a carp. Didn't even know we had suckers in the Logan.
Anyone know what kind of sucker this is? Anyone, anyone - Bueller?

Guess I'm the like the overbearing Science teacher at the school dance, poking a basic Biology text between the dancing couple, to be sure their young enthusiasm hadn't got the better of them. This sucker pup was frisky and frothing, spewing milt at the mention.

Still debating - bait, or BBQ. Just filleted up a couple nice slabs of white meat. Might still share some guts and trimmings with the cats, but the Logan flows hard and clear. So put up a milk and creole salty soak. See what comes. Wonder what kind of beast would nab a whole sucker head! Maybe a 37 inch toad catfish?

Short quick trip on the way home, but nice to nab some tugs all the same. Let us know how your carp-adventures goes. I'd be willing to try a Logan River carp, more the the slurry sloppy marshy ones out of the Cutler or Bear.

Cheers, and fine tugs, good fillets to ya!

[#800000]Carp are considered to be very desirable in both Europe and Asia for its food value and taste. In Germany, fishermen lease streams just for the carp population present in them. I have eaten smoked and pickled sucker meat and find it as good as any other smoked white meat fish or pickled herring.[/#800000]

[#000000]I HATE CARP. Yes some types do taste good, but most that are in Utah waters are garbage. Carp destroy and outbreed everything those dang creatures. In Europe, yes, there is a different environment and habitat for them. You cannot compare North America to Europe. Eat as many as you can buddy. Kill and fry them all. But I do agree some are fine eating. [fishin]

I hate them too they have almost completely destroyed the fishery at Utah lake, muddied it up, and destroyed much of the environment there. Well we can thank the pioneers for them.
