My Daughter was lucky enough to catch 2 of these babies, 2 casts in a row. Pretty sweet on a ultralight SMB setup. She was stoked!

Sorry for the carp, but nice going on the other species (kidding, they can be as fun a run as a Muskie - just less toothy to land! And at least those you don't have to release safely [pirate])
Curious - any size to the Crappie? I've only caught a few through the ice there, and most were pretty dinky. Though haven't been often. The only Crappie I've run into at Newton were smaller teens - maybe I just haven't found 'em, but my guess - the Musky know how tasty they are too so they don't get much change to get much bigger. Wish the View were closer - I'd like to try some spring-time on that lake! Sounds like a fun trip. Thanks for sharing.

Been up to pineview to check things out......those crappie range from small to extremely small. But I consider it lucky there's any crappie in there left at all. This was the first I've bothered crappie fishing it in maybe 8 years. I don't even bother with perch .....just a few times ice fishing was all. It was only good one trip the other trips were sparse. There's still a good number of perch but not the good old days anymore. Don't get me wrong, tiger muskie can be fun to catch, but I sure wish they quit planting them in pineview. They kill way too many fish. Some of those smb are nice, but many many smb are harassed to the point they can't forage. I analyzed a 7 inch smb out of curiosity two days ago. It looked like it was sooo starved. Turns out exactly the case. It was a mature female! No bigger than a perch but the egg sacks were ripe and ready! Two big egg sacks with a batch of mature eggs. The eggs were bigger than the fillets. I never would have guessed that fish was fully mature. There's a 90 percent reduction in lmb at newton the past 3 years. I don't even bother to head there anymore. Too far, too slow, nothing but muskies.

![]() I know. I grew up on the east coast and caught nice SMB , LMB and Craps all day long, but getting 2 Muskies in the boat in one day is almost unheard of back there. Special lake we have here for sure. [signature]

Yep damn Muskies. They've caused all the stunted Bass, Perch, Crappie now starving because they have no food to feed the gazillion Bass, Perch, Crappie in PV. Yep the Muskies have caused this 'over population' of these fish. Amazing truly amazing what Muskies have created. [:/][:/] [signature]

My six year old is kinda small for his age and combine that with the fish dangling closer to the camera and voila! A 10" crappie looks more like a 13"crappie ;-)

yeah, like YOU would know! (teehee- nighttime is the right time, no?) I know they are out there at the View, though I have my doubts about Newton, and a low water year, what'll that do. . . . even with the die off due to bad handling (or folks that don't have a clue) what will that mean for Musky. And overall fish - growth of the panfishery. There's sure loads of young basslings, perch - and such for the toothies to scarf on. Interesting mix. Curious to know how the planted cats will do, with the competition, and low water. Probably more suited to their level of temp, depth and scaventry. Pineview's got a lot more surface acres, no doubt. |
