Bear River Mauling/ Sloughs Redemption
#1
My Bro-in-law got a new toon so we went for an evening cruise to give it a sea trial. Toon worked great, now on to the fishing report. We hit the Benson Bear River and tried bass, walleye and catfish riggings. Worked it hard for an hour and a half and all I did was lose tackle, in fact it was good I took six poles because I lost half of my riggings. Then I decided to try a side slough for the last half hour before sundown. Good choice, I got across the too shallow to run mouth and just started to troll and WAM a big ugly male cat was on the end of the line. After an interesting fight trying to keep it out of my motor, I landed the 23" ugly fellow that was so homely it was hanging out with carp. Went back to dragging the minner and found one that was so dumb it forgot to hang on, so I proceeded to cut my "s" and noticed a big wave starting to rise out of the glass where my minnow was so I nailed it and it was fish on, a purdy Polly 20" female found her way to my net. The sun was still up so back to work, found another forgetful kitty that grabbed and started to run but forgot to take the hook. Made my loop and started to head back to the river and zing the final fish was on, it was purdy too but only 16" but it did have a belly on it so it looked very healthy. I took a second loop even though the sun had now dropped out of sight, but the game was over and nothing wanted to play. Headed back upstream to my launch and didn't think I'd ever get there. The river is running so fast I maxed out my trolling motor speed and was just verily making headway against it. Got to the truck around 10:00 so the measure and pictures are not so great. I'll post the pics when I get to a computer. Later J

Sounds fun. So tell me more about the Eyes? [:/]

Least you got into some messy tugs. Are you walking the bottom in them muddy sloughs? Leaches'll find ya!

Yer learning of TDs techniques looks to be expanding into your fishy tales too! [blush]

Look forward to your followup. How'd the Bro-ham do?

I think I'm ready for some Tiger-hunting! But also figure it's gotta be warm enough for Bass/Crappie along the river. Has the Avalanche been camped out there?

Heard tales of a couple eyes coming to nets, so I thought I'd try for them, but they weren't wanting to play with me. I really want some fish tacos, but I guess I'm going to have to buy them.

Those sloughs are shallow but I'm still floating and trolling under electric power in about 13" of water. That's why I get waves and wild water when they hit. It's pretty crazy they are hanging out in that shallow of water.

Don't know what's up with the bass, crappie and bluegills this year, I don't seem to be able to find any and I don't think the avalanche guy is either. At least not in your spot. I see a car every once in a while but nothing consistent over there this year. Seems like the cats are the only game fish that will play this year.

Bro law did great, except the silly fish avoided his hook. Might have something to do with me fishing water that shouldn't have fish in them. I would have never fished these locations a year ago. Still can't believe I catch fish there. Oh did I mention, last night was a totally new location and so this isn't just one hot spot, I've caught the cats in three totally different spots the only similarity is depth. One other thing that is strange, I only catch them on one pole, and for some reason it's my worst one.
