Freedoms Dream was on Utah Lake 3 of the 4 day holiday week-end loaded with American Patriots. Saturday we were delighted to have the DeVrie family aboard.
The family had come together from throughout the country to celebrate Independence day.
The Devries are special in that the family has a long and proud tradition of military service. We had the grandfather, father and four sons aboard who are all combat veterans. Three of them are still active military (Navy and Marines). Collectively the family has served during the Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
They brought along the grandmother, mother and daughters to join in on the fishing trip.
The boat was filled with cajoling one another as brothers are prone to do and much laughter as fish after fish was brought aboard the boat and just as many lost. Although they were catching many fish it seemed that the real joy was being together as a family in the great outdoors.
They caught blue gill, white bass, mud cats and channel cats which was the specie we targeted.
Total catch exceeded 20 fish. The largest channels were in the 6 to 10 pound class. The big spawners were released as is our custom aboard the boat. The 2 and 3 pounders were fileted and packaged for a fish fry and taken with them at the end of the day.
It is always an honor to have vets aboard, which is of course our mission, but this family is special and made the holiday something to remember. We will be out again today with wounded warriors aboard. Watch for us on the lake.
