I don't know the requirements for Kayaks. But I do know that your hands are going to be full keeping your place in the river. That doesn't leave a hand for the rod. I use my feet to keep my place in the river. Also to keep me out of trouble. When your fighting a fish the boat will pull right over the fish. That will leave you in line of fire if the fish jumps. If you have both hands on the rod which you will need you won't be able to get away from it. I am sure that someone has done it and would be a better person to help you with. Just be very careful. Use a short rod 7 to 8 foot max. Use hatchery morts or carp for bait. There are a lot of holes that you could use. You will have to see how they will work for your kind of boat. Ron

+1 on the short rod suggestion by Ron. Don't let Cabelas fool you into needing a 12 foot eagle claw or ugly stik... espeically from a boat, and especially if you're in a kayak.
I've seen videos of people catching them on the Fraser in kayaks. I think it was even on some TV show on NBC sports network... extreme kayak fishing or whatever it was called. For bait, I prefer anything that's fresh and typically found in the river. Good luck! [signature]

IMO it is insane to think you can get into the snake river steer a kayak, hook the fish fight a 3-7 foot fish. land it. release it? Just saying........ Like someone said wear a PFD. and have your buddy video tape so we all can see the keystone cop action......
Best of luck. I wouldn't be in the snake river in a kayak trying to fight these fish. Keep the fish in the water. Big brother is watching you

My first observation would be, "be very comfortable with your kayak"
Tons of Vids on people catching sturgeon from one not to mention even Sharks. What kind of fishing have you done with yours? [signature]

With the right kayak, I am confident it would be as safe as idahoron's setup. And since he has caught numerous sturgeon from a toon, It seems like certain kayaks would be safe. The Hobies keep your hands free by pedalling, if you do need to steer, it can be quickly done by hand using the rudder, and there is little chance if any of the ProAngler tipping over. You also will have easy access to the sturgeon once you get it close to the kayak, It would be right at your side so you wouldn't have to lean over much to unhook it. For this type of fishing, I'd probably wear a PFD in case I get hit in the head by a jumping sturgeon.

I forgot about the ones with the foot peddles. Those would work fine if you can go backwards and forwards. It would probably be a kick. Ron

No backwards on the Hobie but there is another kayak out there that has that option. The Hobie does turn very quickly so you could get away from the sturgeon easily or get out of any sticky situations without problems.
Ron, wouldn't mind going out with you on one of your trips if you are interested in a tag along. I can pedal my kayak for many miles, even upstream, without much effort at all. Also wouldn't mind trying out the GoPro a little more with the sturgeon. Very few jumpers on the last trip I was on. [signature]
