Yankee Meadows report
#1
Spend a couple days fishing this lake over the weekend. The fishing was extremely slow but I needed to do some ice fishing. Saturday had the most people up on top but they were all cutting trees and taking pictures of the crazy ice fisherman. I was working the dam area and the other group of 6 was down by the boat ramp. It seemed like they had some action but only managed to catch 2 fish. I think they had a little to much to drink before they showed up. I didn't even have a bite until about a hour before dark and managed 2 brookies and 5 bows averaging between 12-17". A 4x4 is needed until Wednesday and then you could take a car in with chains.

Ice thickness was around 4" of solid ice and 2" of melted ice on top. It should refreeze but last year it opened back up after getting 8" of clear ice. I'd check the thickness close to shore until the temperatures drops again.

I talked to a couple guys who fished all morning and they said it was great until after lunch and they landed a couple big fish. I seen those big fish(14") and from the looks of it the best time is first light and last light. No cuts only bows and brookies.

PS. Be carefull coming off the mtn. with all the black ice and snow.

Plent of people have read my two reports and your the only one that made even a comment. I don't get out and fish as much as I would like but I still pass on some good info about where I fish.

I didn't take any pictures of Yankee because it was just me fishing and I didn't catch or see anything worth taking a picture of.

Southernman is right it is up Parowan canyon but most people don't know where that is so I say its on the way to Brian Head ski resort or Cedar Breaks.

Yankee is usually one of the first to have safe ice but it tends to melt and access sucks during winter. If you have sleds or four wheelers you can make it but the ride in is about 10 miles or so. The road going up is a 10% to 15% grade so you know why its so dangerous.

If you plan on heading up there let me know I'll meet you there.

[cool]Hey, Bro, for what it's worth, I enjoy your reports. I used to run around in the hills down there a bit, but never did fish Yankee Meadows. How is it as a summer fishery?

Who knows, one of these days I may PM you to meet me up there...or down there when I get moved back. We have much fun.

Thanks guys. With out you and Southernman coming up it seems like I'm the only one that posts anything about Southern Utah.

Tubedude, Yankee during the summer can produce some nice fish. I usually don't do much fishing here during the summer months mainly because I'd rather be someplace else. I like fishing this lake during winter because it doesn't get much pressure. The main problem with Yankee is its mainly a tourist put and take lake like Duck Creek, Aspen Mirror and Navajo lake. The last couple years it doesn't seem like the DWR is stocking half as many fish with the low water conditions and disease in the Mammoth hatchery. If you want to do some fishing I'm sure we could find a better place.

Southerman has some great video of this lake. I'm sure he wouldn't mind sending you a copy.
