rivrs End Tackle Report

August 9, 2013

Best Bites
Striped Bass - Well August started slow and stayed there. Most of the local reefs have bass but they're on the smaller side. Bunker are still plentiful in the lower Connecticut River and are taking some bass on Hatchetts and Long Sand Shoal but they are trending smaller in size and less of them. Similar on the Westbrook and Clinton Reefs. The Race and Outer Bartletts are mostly a nighttime bite.
Schoolies are showing on Inner Bartletts.
Bluefish - Plum Gut seems to have better action than the Race with some surface action at slack tide. Blues are being caught from the DEP Piers, mostly at night.
Snapper Blues - The run is good and the sizes are crazy. At the same spot you can catch them from 3" to 6". They're good at the DEP Piers, Lieutenant And Blackhall Rivers.
Fluke - Good news, bad news. Good- there's been an upsurge in doormats this week in deep water from Black Point to Block Island at times 100' plus. Weigh ins at here and Hillyers have spiked. Bad- shallow water catching is down from here to Misquamicut. There has been some catching and it's trending down, possibly due to the lack of small bait near shore.
The Tri-Shop Fluke Contest is on, call us 860-388-2283, Hillyers 860-443-7615 or the Fish Connection 860-885-1739 for details.
1st - Steve Barron - 11.85#
2nd - Rich Reicherl - 10.70#
3rd - Mark Sharoyer - 10.50#
Porgies - No complaints coming in this week. Most all the local rockpiles are doing well in number and size. On a recent trip to the Watch Hill Lighthouse, shore anglers were getting limit catches. We're also hearing of good catches of Northern Kingfish at Hammonasset, these are some tasty and easy to catch from shore.
Blue Crabs - Still very good with bouts of excellent in the Connecticut River. Some of the back coves are better than the main River. Oyster River just OK. Some of the dock pilings are starting to hold crabs.
Blackfish - No reports came in this week.
