Utah Lake State Park - North Jetty report
#1
Hot, hot, hot, hot! Fished the north jetty for about an hour this afternoon from 3:30-4:30 pm. Couldn't keep the white bass off my hooks. There were three of us fishing the open water and we were catching one white bass after another. One guy was fishing with a tandem rig with white sparkle jigs and he was getting doubles one out of five casts. The warmer weather has melted the ice of the lake at the end of the jetty and this seemed to have turned on the white bass. I started with a tandem rig dragged on the bottom, but later put on a bobber when I realized that the fish was congregated about 12-15 feet away from shore. I would just toss the rig out, twitch and stop a couple of times and wham, fish on. When I left, the other two anglers were still catching fish. Ended up taking home 43 white bass ranging from 9-12 inches. It took me about an hour and a half filleting these guys. Man, my arms are sore from filleting and my thumb is all scratched up from lipping that many fish. It's been awhile since my thumb took that kind of a beating. I wasn't prepared for this kind of action so I didn't bring a bucket with me. I ended up emptying my fishing backpack and stuffing all 43 in that backpack. The other anglers were kinda snickering when I started stuffing all that fish in my backpack. It has been rinsed with Comet twice and is now hanging in my garage.

What a fun day!

Awsome!!! Glad to hear it. I fished Lindon and AMF today around 2:00 with no luck what so ever. I think I'm heading down there tomorrow if I can! What where you using?

[#ff0000][size 3]I love the backpack story! I was in the no-where's of western Montana on a little creek you could jump across and found a secluded beaver dam loaded with 20" hungry brookies. I was with a friend and his dad, we were supposed to leave in twenty minutes, I could barely move in the willows, didn't take my creel, having to much fun to make a stringer, and so started stuffing them head first in my bib-overalls. Twenty two minutes and a full limit later I was heading for the truck with fish tails flapping everywhere. I thought my friend's dad was going to split a gut. It took two washings with baking soda before I could wear those bibs in the house again. I've never caught white bass but can see I will have to add them to my list of new species to chase. Is this the best time of year for them or can you pick them up in the summer or later on through the ice? I like the way those Wipers fillet up and taste battered and fried, any comparison? Excellent reprot kastmaster. I'm glad someone finally got into the fish! That's pretty funny about stuffing them in the backpack! Good luck next time you head out.

Now until spring is some of the best white bass fishing. They tend to stack close to structure much more in the winter time. They do fillet up very nicely. The wiper is a cross breed between a striper and a white bass. The whites are rather tastey, it's just a matter of finding them.

Best of luck!

GOod report love the story, I had to stuff fish into the big pockets inside my fishing vest once to get them to the car! The vest is still not allowed in the house!

Excellent report! I'll be heading out this saturday afternoon. What does everybody suggest as the best color/size jigs to use for these cold water whiteys? I've heard white, pink, orange. Maybe the color doesn't matter so much as long as you can find a school. Anyway, I haven't caught a white bass this entire year. Usually I land a few when I'm catfishing, or I target them but haven't this year.

It must be the time of year. Me and my son were fishing a park in the S.L.C. valley .We were just carp fishing with bread when I put a little black & chartruese curlytail on(just for the hell of it) and just about every cast white bass would take the jig. we kept 10 and threw back probably twice that amount.I did not even know this little stream had white bass. The fish were pretty small about 6"to9"but we still had a good time.

Some guys have all the luck![Smile] I went out there today and fished for five hours. The whities don't like me! not even a nibble. There was another guy there who said it was hot on Sunday also. He caught about 60 and some crappie.

I guess they move around alot. [Sad] I was fishing the North dike right next to a blood spot. I guess that's where you where throwing the fish before you stuffed them in the back pack.

H898 and all,

Sorry for the late reply and sorry to hear the action was not as good today, h898. My schedule finally opened up to be able to get me on the computer. I started fishing the North jetty right where the big concrete pipe sticks out. No bites at that spot, but the other guy was fishing right at the point and he was catching fish, casting straight and dragging his rig on the bottom. So I moved closer to him and positioned myself to his left and started casting to my left, still no bites either. I ended up violating my own rule of proper angler space and started fishing close to him but not casting to where he was casting. The fish was concentrated pretty much close to shore, and with the water clearing up a little, I can see a drop-off about 3-4 feet from the edge of the ice. I was probably standing about two feet from the edge because of all ice that was built up on the shore. I am going to try and hit it again on Friday around 4 pm. Maybe I'll see you there H898.

hey are you guys fishing that triangular piece of open water on the south side of the dike? Fished that thing on Monday not even a nibble on my white tube jigs. It looked that at one point people were even out on the ice what with the trail of footprints on the snow. Even went to Lincoln with no luck. Even the mini-bass and mini-gills this year are not staying in the hot water for more than a day at a time. Lindon ---don't bother only 15 inches of water!!! Ice is now unsafe even for risk-takers like me even in all harbors. Pumphouse had only 1/2 inch of ice now with open water past the reeds. Don't know what's going on this year, I think I'm jinxed or something. Just can't find these white bass this year!! Last year Lincoln was the hot spot with State Park jetty in second place. I hope my luck changes soon. I getting quite jealous hearing about the crazy stuffing into the backpacks. By the way don't worry about the space issue I like fishing right next to the action and don't mind others next to me ---that's usually how white bass fishing works--there isn't enough space for people to spread out---if you're too far away you're not going to catch anything. I get mad when people try to stake out too much space as if they owned the lake or something. The way I see we all have an equal right to fish a particular spot especially when that's the only spot that is producing fish. As long as people are not casting right on top of my line, that is. Taking turns to cast into the same spot works if properly coordinated. If I want more space, my main method is to not let anyone know about a particular spot. Once they show up anyway I'm not going to get mad, yell and scream, reproach, or send out dirty looks to keep people away as long as I sense some degree of mutual respect.

I tried that triangular spot also, nothing! I moved to the South dike and tried there for an hour no bites either. I guess it's a hit or miss kind of thing. I did notice though that the guy who said it was hot on Sunday was fishing exactly where Kastmaster described. He was dragging the bottom in the same fashion and snagging a hell of alot. Looked like he spent more time retying than anything [Smile]

Am I just blind or something? I didn't see any opening at the very tip of the N jetty, just the triangular spot. Where is this spot more precisely?

It's not really an opening the ice just ends and the water begins and streches out into the lake.
