Your Invite to Join Us for Whitefish Fishing at Bear Lake
#1
[#0000ff]This is your invite for a morning of fishing for the famous Bonneville Whitefish at Bear Lake. Their spawn typically runs the first two weeks of December and so consider yourself invited to join me and several other BFTers on Saturday, December 7th.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]As was mentioned over on another post by RILEYFISH, “Sounds like we should try and do a mini-salsa boys [get-together] for whites.” That’s not a half bad idea Mark. Heck in fact, I wouldn’t mind just reincarnating the old “Salsa Boyz” party and just hold it during the whitefish run every year from now on. What are your thoughts on that?[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]My experience is that the whitefish fishing is best early in the morning from first light up until about 10:00 AM. The nice thing about fishing the whitefish run is that once you have caught your limit of whites (limit is 10), you can go out trolling or jigging for the big cuts and macks. The whitefish fishing kind of tapers off mid to late morning. But the lake trout and cutthroat fishing is still in full swing that time of day.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I’ve got a brand new white BFT baseball cap (embroidered “BFT”) for the first guy to catch their limit of whites that morning. Just come over to my boat and get it.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I think that Scott Tolentino (BearLakeFishGuy … UDWR Fisheries Biologist) will be posting up some pictures of his favorite whitefish lures and some tips on how to catch them.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Hopefully, on Friday evening, (Dec. 6th … the night before the party) I will be uploading a video to YouTube where Scott will be demonstrating how to fillet those whitefish preparatory to smoking or cooking them. Some of us (me included) have trouble removing the “Y” bones in those whites. In the video, Scott will be showing you the best way to do that. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]If you have any questions about the get-together or how to catch the Bonneville Whitefish, feel free to post them here or shoot me a PM.[/#0000ff]

Hey Coot, I'd love to join in this year as long as other things don't come up and ruin my chance to do it... I'll plan on coming and hope to find them this year, last year I hit it too early and missed the fun. Plus that hat needs to be mine so I'll have to do my best to get it.... See ya there... thanks J

I am in, weather and work permitting.

How about a "Plan B" date if the run changes or weather is an issue?

That's a good question Pat. Weather that time of year is always a little dicy. But unless someone else wants to prep up a "Plan B", plan A is all that exists. I have too much on my plate to consider a plan B. If plan A is a bust (yea, I've seen that before) there probably won't be a plan b. I ain't the hard core fisherman you remember me once being. And I know you remember because you were with me on several of my ludicrus trips.

I sure hope you and all the "ole boys" can make it. I'd love to shake your hands again. And, I'd love to meet some new BFT blood too.

I will try to make it. I would love to meet some of you guys and learn more about that lake. Do you need down riggers for it? (I don't have that). I'm looking forward to the lures and tackle tips.

Would love to join the white fish fest, however, I am boatless. If anyone has an open spot in their boat, I am happy to help pay for gas etc. Please pm me if you have an open spot. Thanks. David

About ditto there, seems I'm in the same boat, or lack of. Need to check calendars, but I'd love to give it a real try.

Last year thought Scott was talking up tube jigs, white/glow. Or bouncing Kastmasters off the bottom. Bit of crawler, cisco, or waxie.
Maybe that was more ice tactics.

Anyone wager if it'll freeze this year?

[#0000FF]Depending on weather and other factors I might go up and join Scott for a prospecting trip during the week before the gathering.

I thoroughly enjoyed the trip with you and Randy last year. Good fishing and good company.

As always, I am pretty excited about the whitefish run at Bear Lake. Below are a few old posts that have pics and stories and tips and tricks to help newbees with a head start and a few of my favorite memories that get me all excited:

Hey Coot,

It was great to run into you today and chat for a bit. We need to get together one day and get caught up.

Like I told you, I will not be attending the get together, have to stay local for "On Call" duties for work again. I will be up there for the week of Turkey day and most likely the weekend after the get together so hopefully I don't miss my chance at the whites.

Have fun all, I am sure it will be a blast.

Awesome! Thanks for the flashbacks.

The calendar check gives me a thumbs up, generous friends, I've got a ride. I'll be ready for a bit of celebrating by that time.

Look forward to meeting and visiting with the Salsa Boyz, and hopefully, some white fishies too!
