Vexilar SonarPhone?
#1
I saw this in the latest Cabela catalog, and just looking for any imput on it. Looks pretty cool, you download a free app for your Smartphone or Iphone/Ipad the actual (I guess) Transducer looks like a bobber and works on the WI-FI principle. Its works like a color fishfinder, showing fish icons, depth, water temp. You can google it or just go to the Vexilar web site. Thinking this would be great for bank fishing. Any thoughts?

I've saw that also, as well as other ones( https://buydeeper.com/deeper and http://www.gizmag.com/reelsonar-smartpho...der/26006/). It would be nice if it worked since it's much cheaper, but what do you get for a fraction of the price? Plus what if you dropped your phone into the water?

Good point about dropping the phone in the water, just hae to be a little more careful. Those others looked kinda gimmicy, Veliar is a pretty trusted name, and the demo app is pretty pretty cool. check out their video knows might be the ticket?? [sly]

here's the web site:

I seen it as well at Scheel's. Looks like an awesome invention. I question the battery life in the cold weather during ice fishing.

The concept isn't new. Hummingbird had the "Smart Cast" fish finder several years ago. This just uses your smart device as a screen. The devil is in the details. Will it utilize the screen effectively? Smart phone screens have much greater detail than the old "Smart Cast" was capable of. Battery life of the phone and the transducer are going to be issues. The phone can be hooked up to a 12 volt system. The transducer will be the lynchpin. Looks like they are going to be sealed. Might be tough to replace the batteries. They're gonna have a $60 no questions asked replacement policy. Send it in and they'll replace it with another one that has fresh batteries. How long will that take?

Or you can get the upgraded system that uses a 12 volt battery for the transducer. Not designed to be portable though. Designed to be mounted on a boat. But you could probably use some PVC or something to build an adaptor.

Or they'll have one with it's own 12 volt battery.

Might be worth a look. You could be checking your second pole and look at your phone to see what's happening back at your other pole.

I think this is a GREAT idea! I wanted one for ice fishing and when I looked it up, a REP from Vex said it was Sadly not built for cold weather. However, by EOY 2014 they should have a new model called the Sonar Phone 2.0 which would have ICE FISHING capabilities. So I am waiting on that.
