Trophy Striped Bass ABOVE dam..lake mead??
#1
Hello,

I have been following posts on this forum and have had a question I have been meaning to ask. I know some of you have caught bigger non -schooled stripers on Mead and was wondering if you anyone is willing to divulge any tips on doing so. I have seen most come from Echo/Overton arm area and figure winter is probably best to find them. I do go to Willow but was wondering what techniques(I prefer lures) and depths work on the massive Mead side and how to find them and hook em. I know this makes it extremely difficult to catch them vs below dam. Just curious...Wink

South of Callville and the Vegas Wash you can troll large Gizzard Shad.
20 pound line with in-line weights using a trap rig.

Trolling live gizzard shad using a trap-rig. Start with a 1-ounce in-line trolling sinker that comes with a swivel at one end and ties that on the main line.

The swivel keeps the trolled bait from twisting the line. To the sinker tie on a leader approximately equal in length to that of his fishing rod, and at the end of the leader tie a single hook using a snell or a nail knot.

A couple of inches below the single hook, the angler ties in a No. 6 treble hook as a stinger.
To this rig, the angler adds a hand-size gizzard shad or bigger by hooking the bait fish through the nose with the single hook. The treble hook, or stinger, is positioned at the tail end of the dorsal fin or in the fish’s vent. When everything is ready, troll this setup in about 30 feet of water.

I will send a pic of the trap rig.
