December 21st for many it is the shortest day of the year, for my son and I we still managed to check and fish (well almost) four bodies of water.
Mackey: Good news --bad news kokes are everywhere and are easy to catch, however, they are five to six inches. Cisco have twice the meat! The ice is a crazy 20 -24 inches, you will probably need an extension in a month. I have iced fished Mackey for over a decade on this date, and I have never seen the ice this thick this early. OK they are not easy to catch unless you know what you are doing. I recommend two pound test; if you hook into a giant trout just test your drag for an hour[] A flasher helps big time, both electronic and a spoon on your line. Also find 30 feet of water and you should be good. You are not going to get a meal, but you could have a blast catching them for hours. Smallest kokes I have ever caught, and I have been fishing for a while. The North wind was brutal and with the new snow was in my face all morning. I am very cold tolerant; however, I was done by 11:30 AM. One of the few days I wish I brought my shelter.
Lava Lake: Mud hole, very little water. Probably common information for some.
Carey Lake: Ice is four inches, we had one bite in thirty minutes. Knew Little Wood would be more enjoyable.
Little Wood Res.: You may catch a 5-6 inch brookie or a 20 inch bow. We iced a lot of fish in a couple of hours. Ice is 8 inches, fish near shore in 15 foot of water, remember Little Wood is deep, we had very few hits at 30 feet of water. All colors worked, fish could be found throughout the column. Once again the Vex pays for itself.
I don't believe I am hot spotting, due to the fact of the large amount of small kokes and if your willing to pay $50 for gas for six inch kokes great for the Idaho economy.
May all of you have great fishing this Holiday Season!
