Okay, there's a new concept for me. What is "backing" and how is it done and in what situations?

backing is a term used with all types of fishing reels. [ul] [li]Usualy concisting of a cheeper heaver test line[/li] [li]is used as a filler to bring down the cost of spooling expencive lines.[/li] [li]normaly backer will concist of 3/4 backer material then 1/4 of premium line.[/li] [li]this is the case with flyfishing and any other type when you find your self having to replace the last 50 - 100 feet of your premium line with out having to strip the entire reel. there is quite a savings when this is done. this will allow you to top off a number of reels. [/li] [li]you can use or leave older heaver line on the reel year after year.[/li][/ul]

I seldom do this excpt on my fly reels but is a common practice by the best of anglers. I put on a good 200 feet of 20-40 pound test mono before spooling on my fly line. this gives you lots of room to fight a monster fishy insted of hitting the end of 50 -100 feet of fly line only to have your tippit snap off.

this can be a money saver on a ice fishing reel there are more oppertunities to loose 25 - 50

As usual, your knowledge shines through. Now it sorta makes sense. Just gotta see it. I'm a guy... very visual. Keep them hottie wives outta my line of site!

Jason,

I use double sided carpet tape. Cut a small piece and apply it to the reel. Braid sticks to it like mad and will never spin on the reel. Beats mono hands down and it saves lots of space on the reel in case you want to put a bunch of braid on it.
