Bear Lake Fishing Report:
Bear Lake is beginning to ice over and there is a lot of ice in many places and there are large sheets of ice drifting around on the lake. You no longer can launch boats, and there is no ice thick enough for ice fishing. This could change if any wind develops and takes the ice off the lake. All ramps have been plowed and are currently down to the concrete. The Bonneville cisco run is in full swing and the run has likely peaked. Anglers were able to dipnet limits of fish in under 5 minutes this morning. Dipnetting should be good this coming weekend of January 25-26, but conditions will vary depending on the wind and ice. Remember, in order to keep a cutthroat trout from Bear Lake it must have a healed fin clip (usually the adipose fin). Cutthroat trout with all fins intact have to be released, including fish that are tagged with all of their fins. Consider releasing large lake trout in order to maintain the fishery. Lake trout can easily live to over 35 years old in Bear Lake. We will update the report either every other day or every day, depending on weather and fish-run conditions. PLEASE ONLY CALL AFTER 5pm each evening, in order to keep the business lines open during the day. 435-946-8501.

Jeez! It couldn't have done this two weeks ago!
Do you there may be decent ice next weekend and do you think the cisco will still be running?

From the Idaho Board I want to thank you for the continual updates. I was raised in the Bear Lake Valley and am looking forward of doing the cisco run with my son and daughter; something I have not done in a while.
Best,

I would imagine the cisco to be done with the spawning run about the middle of next week or by Feb 1st at the very latest. Its been very mild this year at Bear Lake with the exception of a couple of cold weeks before Christmas. Whether the lake freezes solid enough for ice fishing this year is anyone's guess. If the wind blows, all the ice could be gone in a matter of one hour or less! However, if it gets cold and calm it could lock it up tight.

50% of the lake is frozen. There is 25 yards of ice almost all around the lake. The lake is Frozen from the Rainbow point north all the way across. The rock pile is frozen but no way to get out yet 1-2Inch all the way there. We got our cisco during the day in the net jigging over the net with a silver shiny spoon, we also go some jigging and snagging them. When I looked at rainbow it looked like you could almost launch a boat, if we get warm that will be the first place you will be able to launch.
