Canal Co. Dam below Oneida Narrows still on.
#1
I just got back from a land owner's meeting and learned the proposed dam at the mouth of the canyon below the existing Dam.is still on. It was nixed by the State and I thought.it was a dead deal. But they are planning to start building next year. However, they still have some hurdles and a bunch of meetings to get through. One on trout. I like the idea myself. That would be two reservoirs with in 3 miles of the property I have for sale here on BigFish.

I have mixed feelings on it. I don't like the tactics of the canal company, but I find myself fishing the river less and less because of the high flows and all the debris that is constantly floating in the water. Not to mention all the trash that people leave there. If it means more consistent water levels at some of the largemouth reservoirs nearby, plus another reservoir for smallmouth, it might not be all that bad. It's a very picturesque canyon which will be Sad to lose, but like I said, people keep trashing it anyway, and the large trout seem less and less common there.

I also have mixed feelings on it. I get my water from twin lakes and worry about water shares every summer, but i would hate to see the narrows under water, greg i think the trout fishing is better now than it has been in 10 years, its not what it use to be when they planted browns in there but with the more stable flows of the last 5 years i think the fish are doing well. I also think that if built the fishing will be poor much like onieda. Also there is a narrow clean up ever spring if anyone would like to come gather trash, they do a cook out after, i will find out what the date is.

I've definitely been catching large numbers of trout up there, but like you said, nice browns are few and far between. It's fun fishing, but there are some better trout waters in the area that I prefer. I really enjoy catching the smallmouth in the river too, but all the floating debris in the water most of the year makes it really frustrating to try to work a lure.

I actually quite like the fishing in the reservoir lately. Last year I caught smallmouth to 18" and walleye to 30" up there. I'm wondering if there was a second reservoir if the water would be clearer in it all year since it will just be a tailwater going in to it. That would be nice to use clearwater tactics for smallmouth. I'm definitely liking the idea of Condie, Winder and Twin staying full and not having die offs. It would affect the walleye run though, which I know you're fond of. I guess we'll see what happens.

I'll have to see if I can make it up there to the clean up, it could certainly use it!
