Tube Jigs
#1
Never used them before but want to learn them. So my 3 questions I have are: 1-Should I get painted or plain jig heads, 2-what size of of tube jig should I get? 3-What color should I try? I seriously got like 5 bucks on my budget for this so I can only try one and want it to be successful.

1/8 oz lead heads (unpainted since they are inside the tube) with 2 3/4" white tubes...Deadly!

Hey FL, have used tube jigs several years up at Pineview with varying success. But this brute was caught on a 3" salt and pepper jig just off the Cemetery Point.

And my youngest son caught this one a week later with a dark oil green tube in almost same spot.

Check around online, I have found tube jig selections on sale for less than $15.00 with 6 or 8 color selections, a dozen jig heads all in a nice compartmented plastic box.

[#0000FF]You weren't very specific on where you will be fishing them and for what species.

There are a lot of different options in size, shape, colors, etc....of both plastics and jig heads for plastics. You can fish tiny 1" or 1 1/2" plastics not only for panfish but even some pretty good sized trout, bass, walleye, etc. You will want bigger tubes for most Utah fishing, but might even go to the huge tubes used for fishing macks on the Gorge or Bear Lake.

There are also choices in shapes for jig heads. Some are streamlined and narrow to fit up inside the tubes. Others have large barbs on them to allow you to fish colored heads outside the plastic...for color contrast or enhancement.

Your budget is not going to allow you to buy a full range of jig heads. Best to try a good assortment of the ones you will likely use most...and then buy more if you develop a serious liking for them.

I have several jig molds that make different sizes and shapes...and I paint them in a wide range of colors. You would be welcome to come over and take a look to help you better decide what your best options might be. And I can give you some good pricing on whatever you might want to get started.

My only good "big fish" bragging rights story is when I caught a 23" momma LMB in Mantua on a 1-1/2" pink tube jig on 4 lb test. She had to be 7 lbs.

One of the best things I learned about jigs from Tubedudes jig write up is that for most jigs, you decide put the action in the lure. I LOVE tubes just because they are versatile like that, cheap, and come in so many colors. You can fish them with a matching or mismatched color painted head in all kinds of shapes and weights, or with tube jig hooks where the weight is inside. You can put even painted jigheads Inside. You can imitate crawdads by bouncing them down through rocks, hang them under bobbers or slip floats, cast or troll them and all that.

5.00 isn't much, as we all know, but depending on what you're after get some 1-1/2" and some 3" in a light color like pearl, some chartreuse, and a pumpkinseed or something brown and speckled to start, with appropriate tube jigheads. 3" Gitzits often come in a multicolor pack with a couple heads. And you can use some of the jigheads you've got, I imagine.

Yeah sorry I wasn't specific. I mostly plan on using them places like Utah Lake, the Jordan River, Strawberry, the Uintas, maybe Deer Creek or East Canyon? Those are the main places I've fished in the past but based on seeing peoples reports I might try Willard Bay, Cutler, the Bear River, and a few other places. I mostly fish for trout and cat fish but would be happy to catch whatever with them(including bait fish like carp lol). The main reason I wanted to try them is because I think I could catch more fish with this in my repertoire.

Also, the $5 was a bit of an exaggeration, I just can't walk in somewhere like sportsmans and leave with a 50$+ bill like we all do [Tongue]. I'm also not in a huge hurry to get them ..I just wanted to know the info for when I do go. Sometime I'll have to stop by your place and check it out. So you could pm me your address and when you're usually home.

You can buy small packs of tubes at sportsmans depending on size. I think they com in 3-4 And 6 packs and they are cheap.I like fishing tubes weightless hooked weedless with a wide gap worm hook.Work it like top water or a jerkbait . Are one of the best all around lures imho.

Amazon or Ebay can be a good source for a plethora of metal-heads. I got a baggie of some jigheads on nice red hooks for cheap. Now if I could just remember where I put them...

Depending on what size you are after - you could consider a variety pack from even a place like Walmart. I found a pack of Crappie tubes on the discount rack for - drumroll - $5bux! All small, but a good variety of colors. I've had good success with the curly tail grubs too.

Might try a "kit" like this one:

Jigs and plastics

If you want to send that $5 for the cat-contest entry [:/] - I could probably manage a care-package, and BFT stickers back at ya. Not to encourage a Southern-Boy! But... I got some Maniac plastics on the cheap, and you might like them. Glow is always good.

In the Uintas you might try a twister tail, as small as you can still cast. Yellow is my choice both head and body.
Retrieve as slow as you can. The tail has to have good action, and to big sinks to fast. Small Small, they are eating nymphs, and scud size food. You'll need very light line, Maybe 4 lb max. Let me know how this turns out.

I have a 21 inch Cut from this set up. Though brookies are more susceptible to this.

Sorry about the Yote...keep on telling myself I'm going to do that and then something comes up and I forget. I think you said you pay by paypal and I use that for like amazon, ebay, etc. but don't know how/where to send it to for this. Remind me how/who I pay again(PM me) and we'll get the show on the road [fishon]!
