anyone been on Oneida lately?

Just wondering if anyone has been on oneida lately chasing smallmouth. I was thinking of trying it next weekend but it's somewhat of a drive for me so was hoping for a few reports.

Thanks

I haven't been up. But I thought there was a thread a week ago with some pix of some nice smallies. If I am remembering, they only caught 6 between two fishermen - but they were good ones.

Had a buddy go try it out, too, but it wasn't very productive. If I'm remembering THAT conversation correctly, he only landed one smallie...

I figured it would be a little early. Another few weeks and it should start heating up good.

If anyone else has a report let me know. Unfortunately I only have monday and tuesday to fish if I decide to make the drive.

Thanks for the report

I fished oneIda today from 12 to 6 it was pretty slow we did manage around 10 fish and my nephew caught his first ssmallmouth. Also I did get my truck and boat all muddy. Weather was better than I thought it would be.

I appreciate the report. Were the carp up on the surface or in the shallows. I usually fish smallmouth and bowfish while i'm up there.

Thanks

The water was clear and was at least 3 feet down we did see some carp cruising around the weed beds. And did snag one .There was little wind yesterday

We went and hit up the river running the whole canyon below the lake on Monday and I landed around 25 smallies. Ranged from a pound to almost 3. They seem to be just taking over everything down through the river. Didnt manage a single walleye and only got around 10 trout. So by all means go smack the smallies and take them away.

Believe me, there are plenty of trout in there still. I caught about 40 the last time I targeted them there, and 50 the trip before that. Personally I'd rather catch smallmouth anyway, but to each their own I suppose.

No doubt. Nevertheless he has a great point. If left unchecked, those smallies will overpopulate and stunt to the point that they become worthless. If you don't think they are taking over that whole system, you either haven't been around very long, or aren't paying attention.

People freak out about walleyes eating everything in the whole wide world and hang scary names on them like top predator, blah blah blah. But those smallies outcompete the shiz out of the walleye. And they eat the shiz out of them too.

I like catching smallies and eating them too, so they are a welcome part of the fishery, but if we implement the "release every bass you catch" mentality on them, we are going to be some sorry suckers.

Oh yeah, I'm fine with taking out some smaller bass to thin the herd so to speak. Same with the trout. I definitely don't agree with the people who want them all dead to protect the precious walleye and trout though.

I don't think the hordes of grocery shoppers fishing the walleye spawn help a whole lot either.
