Good Night Utah Lake, 30 incher?
#1
I had to pick some cousins up at the airport Sunday morning at 7:00 am, so I decided to drive down Saturday afternoon and fish for catfish all night (in place of leaving my house in WY at 4:00am anyway). I figured that with the cold front last week and the heat on Saturday the catfish would be out in force. We launched the Big Tuna at four oclock in the afternoon and were soon into spawning carp.

My nephew, only person I know who likes to fish as much as I do, brought his brand new bow setup and the carp did not stand a chance. I would say he made it look easier than shooting fish in a barrel. Seven inch thick fish in four inch deep water!

After dragging him away from the carp we got set up to fish for cats. My first cast was into a deep hole ten feet off the back of the yack. Nephew cast too. As I was getting my second pole baited the bait clicker on my new Avet (which my wife got me as a shut up and quit talking to me about it present!) started screaming and then my nephews pole bent double and first casts first double!

One was a nice 26 incher (guess?). Over the next 45 minutes we caught ten catfish!

As it got dark we moved spots and set up the lantern, and a buddy from my college wrestling days showed up. I have never had such good fishing in my life. We never had more than ten minutes without a bite all night. My nephew fell asleep for an hour while two catfish played "more cowbell" with his poles.

The best part was there was no nibbling. The fish hit so hard that they circle hooked themselves. What a great night. Here is one of the bigger ones. Do you think he goes thirty? I should have brought a tape. We caught six or seven this size.

I even made it to the airport in time to pick up my aunt and uncle! and nobody thought I would make it. Look how responsible I have become! Get out there, the bite is on!

Great report, Depth! After reading your posts, I'd say you lead a charmed life! I loved your story about your Africa hunting trip. If you ever want need another guy to help pay for gas on a future hunting/fishing trip, I've heard it said I'm not bad company. [bobhappy] Thanks for sharing.

Hey,...Come on man! We need you and those cats on the south team in the cat contest. Only five bucks and pretty sure there is still room for entries.

Very nice cats... gotta be close to 30 inchers. Fun when they really get serious about grub and love. Keep 'em coming.

Hey BLK what happened on your Bird Island trip? Didn't hear the results... Must have missed it if you wrote up a post... Have you broke 30" yet? Sounds like your pond is fishing well.... Our northly pond is starting up now, expect the 28-30" will show up soon if they haven't already... Who knows I might even break 25" soon so the starters are bound to be heading for 30+" Well keep having fun... Later J

Skunk-- I'm still working on that 30 incher. I made one attempt at a night shift on the big pond but got blown off, actually froze off. Wind was coming straight from the north pole. Still trying to get out and as soon as this windy spell passes I'll be there. Even little waves scare me off Ut. Lake.

Went out this a.m. looking for wb and got a nice big supply.... all 5 to 7 inchers. I freeze 'em and then cut 'em up with an old band saw I bought on KSL. Works great but a bit messy.

Bird Island has been good to me this year and I've taken a lot of cats there... just not that one I'm looking for....yet. Paid my dues somewhat already cuz I just got back from the Prop Doc in Orem where I dropped off my slightly "abused" prop for repairs and bought a new one. Got it on and good to go.

Best time is still to come. Full moon again around mid-June so will be doing regular night shifts then.

Good luck to you.... up to a point.

Hey I know how that luck thing goes, but ya don't have to worry too much about us second stringers that don't pay the dues like you varsity guys. Do hope to get up around that 28" mark though. See if I can round out my three with mid 20" fish this weekend. Good luck and keep it fun. Later J

Very nice, for a southern guy. Glad you're NOT in the contest (and no - there's no more room, ALL full up - entries over an all that biz. BUT - if you know me at ALL - expect I'm full of shit! Bring it Boyz! Make a repeat. We're ready for ya! Glowsticks/bells and all!)

Oh shit Ryan - Oh Shiiiiit! (pardon my french - he's a dawg, what can I say!)

Sounds like some fun action. I've been torn between bow and bobber attentions myself. My pup is an equal opportunity squiggler. I love that about her! Next challenge is carp on a fly! But I'm thinnin' this time of year, spawn action - the challenge will be how much backer do I have spooled! Ready set go! GOT my weekend plans lines up. Maybe pull an overnight.

Any northern takers?

Awesome trip, post. Nice to see an enthusiastic kid get in on it. There's a prize for that, just saying (pm me).
But you'll need your BFT banner and entry to official. Small prize to pay for fame and fortune. Well - fame anyway. Kudo's to ya!

Lava I have little doubt that you'll get one this year. Your numbers keep going up. I'm not dedicated enough to get big numbers unless I get lucky. Most of mine will end up 18-25" where I fish. But I'll hope luck strikes. I guess my score around 75 to 83 this year. good luck on the first 30". Later J

Thanks man. I have found that if you just keep on trying eventually you will have success. My trips are pretty sporadic but it'd be fun to go sometime.

I really wanted to join the cat contest, for the banter and a bit of friendly competition, but since I have moved away from utah lake I just never know if I am going to make it back there or not. I guess there are cats in the gorge, which I live by, but so far they have alluded me and caused me nothing but a pile of FRUSTRATION!
