Iowa Kids Fishing Derby June 7
#1
DES MOINES - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is partnering with 1040 WHO's Van and Bonnie and DMACC to host a kids fishing derby from 5 to 9 a.m., on June 7, at the DMACC Lake in Ankeny.

Come and fish while Van and Bonnie broadcast live from the gazebo near the lake, near the intersection of South Ankeny Blvd. and Southwest Oralabor Rd.

The Iowa DNR will be offering hands on fishing instruction, frying fish and answering any fishing questions.

"We are excited to work with Van and Bonnie and DMACC for this fun event. This is a great time of year to fish because bluegills and bass will be close to shore and aggressive and willing to bite," said Joe Larscheid, chief of the DNR's Fisheries Bureau. "This is a great time to take kids fishing or introduce someone to fishing because the likelihood of success is much greater now than other times during the year."

June 7 is the first day of free fishing weekend for Iowa residents. Iowa residents may fish without a license on June 7, 8 and 9. All other regulations remain in place.

Going fishing is part of Healthy and Happy Outdoors (H2O), a campaign to connect Iowans with outdoor resources as a way to reduce stress and improve health. The Iowa DNR will be signing up participants during the fishing event.

Iowans can go online to www.iowadnr.gov/h2o and find more than 30 types of outdoor activities at more than 1,600 state and county parks and recreation areas.

Participants who register for H2O and log activities will automatically be entered for prize drawings. The more activities logged, the more entries submitted.
