I would start out fishing the narrows which is across fro Yellowstone Holiday resort. The south side has always been the best over the 50+ plus years I have fished it.

The west side of the lake from Cherry creek up for a couple of miles can also be good to fish.

The north side of the Madison arm from straight across from the Madison arm resort to the west almost to the point can be good.

One thing to remember Hebgen can get very rough very fast so watch the weather and going accordingly.

I agree with everything already said. I like to float the Madison a little on my Pontoon. Caught some monster Trout.
Best time is the Gulpers... That's when that 60 to 70 cast is a must!

I've fished Hebgen a bit and agree with VNCowboy's recommendations. Wind blows hard there, but the narrows across from the Yellowstone CG is our go to place. Also the shallows to the east of the narrows is good. My assessment is that trout congregate there because nutrients are blown down to that end of the lake and are concentrated in that small area.
Try trolling trout fry imitations, small rapalas with pink stripped sides or spinners with pink highlights.
Watch the horizon for weather changes... it can get rough!

Try the biggest Panther Martin you can buy, black with gold blade, the German Browns love them on the troll.

This is another spinner that has proven effective at Hebgen.

Yes, you can launch at the commercial Yellowstone Holiday CG. See http://www.yellowstoneholiday.com/
They have a nice protected marina, concrete ramp and dock tie-up slips. They charge a fee to launch / or use the slip overnight. There are full hook-ups for RVs or small cabins to rent.
Another location to consider is the public (Forest Service) Lonsomehurst CG located on the south east side of Hebgen in the Madison Arm. Haven't stayed there, but have tied up there several times. http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/gallatin/...recid=5604

Loneurst ramp is a good choice to launch a boat.

Another free place to launch is the Rainbow Campground. You access it for HI way 191 about 6 miles north of West Yellowstone.

We launched a couple times at Lonesomehurst. Other times we just dove up the road till we found a good turn off.
