we have lots of those here in michigan, havent heard of any one trying to float over them, "as of yet"
but ya, could get pretty harry real quick..

If you know they are there, it's usually not a problem to portage around, unless there is a surprise unusually high unexpected flow.
If you're doing rivers you don't know, it's usually better to go upstream the first time. It might require more portaging for going around strong currents, but helps in locating good portaging and resting spots.
