Some friends and i made the trip down to Laughlin on Wednesday to try our luck against the crowds. We fished the river wednesday night for 4 hours and thursday pretty much all day. Friday we went to katherine landing and fished around the dam all day. The river was pretty slow, we caught a few small 2lb stripers on anchovies, also tried fishing some bigger trout lures from the Dam down to the end of Casino Row. At night in front of the casinos we spotted a few good sized fish hanging around the bottom. Stripers in the 5-10lb range is my guess, too silver to be cats or carp and sleek looking. Never got them to bite though. We caught a smallmouth and a 7.6 lb channel cat in the last cove by the dam on the AZ side of Lake Mohave, no stripers though. The fishing was pretty slow, i would probably fish from sundown to sunup on the river if i could do over it again, the jet ski crowd is pretty hard to deal with. I don't mind crowds of respectful boaters/skiers but its about 1 in 10 people that have the proper etiquette down there. We were the minority fishing, and we were treated like unwanted trash every where we went. The bullhead city police even dropped in on us to check license/dui instead of worrying about the idiots going full throttle about 5 feet from us and each other. But they didn't hassle us too bad. It was a learning lesson if nothing else. Hope it helps.
