UL Report & Power Squadron Fail 8/2
#1
I was bored this afternoon, and figured I'd go see if I could finally catch something contest worthy... Nope. I was too lazy to set up the tube so I just fished off the pipe at the bubble up for a couple hours. Started fishing about 2:00 p.m. Weather was decent. About 85 degrees, over cast skies, and a slight breeze. Fishing was HOT the first 30 minutes. I caught 3 cats, and 2 white bass in those first 30 minutes.

The white bass were a quick fix for bait. I ended up catching the 2 whities (both on shrimp) and 4 channels. 2 on shrimp, 2 on white bass. Nothing big today. Largest fish was maybe 24 inches.

Now to the fail...

The power squadron was out in full force (expected on a Saturday afternoon). Some a little too close for comfort. There were 2 wave runners cruising all over the bubble up, one of them thought it would be a fun idea to drive between the last 2 buoys... smack! Nailed the pipe. It must not have been too bad, because after looking at it for a minute or two, they drove off. After they had left I was bummed that I hadn't thought to take a picture. That's okay...

About 30 minutes later a ski boat comes cruising in about 100 feet from me. (the pipe is all the way out of the water to the 4th to last buoy. I doubt there's more than 1 foot of clearance between the last and second to last buoy.) They had the same fun idea that the wave runner had... BAM!!! Smacked the pipe hard. I almost fell out of my chair haha. I remembered to break out my camera this time... Enjoy.[Image: happy.gif]

Right after impact:

Yelling for help:

Help arrives:

The tow of shame:

You'd think the visible pipe added to the line of buoys would be a dead give away... Apparently not.[Image: happy.gif]
Use some common sense out there, folks.

(If this was you, I'm sorry. I couldn't help myself.)

Like moths to a flame. Makes you wonder how many others have pegged that same line in the water when you were and are not around to watch the show.

Thankfully no one got hurt!

I was thinking the exact same thing. They need to plant a lake view cam on the pipe. I'm sure there's at least a couple every weekend.

[#0000FF]Glad you got into some fishy action.

Gotta admit your pics of the pipe pingers brought a tear to my eye...after I quit chortling and guffawing.

I had a similar "moment" on Willard a few years ago when a showoff ski boat impaled itself on a rock hump out off Eagle Beach. They kept coming closer and I tried to wave them off. But when they waved back they didn't use all their fingers. Can you imagine that they asked me to help them when they tore out the transom of their boat? Glad I don't carry a cell phone. I may have been tempted to summon help. Unfortunately, there was another boat in the area that pulled them off.

Looks like the water levels are at least a foot lower at this time than they were last year. The fish will be wearing tennies soon.

The water levels at Utah Lake are very disheartening. Just since last week, it's gone down at least 6" to a foot. I'm almost positive you'll be able to park a lawn chair on the end of the pipe come September.

I was going to say "I bet Tubedude has some great stories", but I remembered you don't fish the weekends.

I was close to the same situation... Saw folks in need and figured I may have to make a phone call... luckily enough there was another member of the squadron within inches.

That is truly awesome. I wish I could have seen it [Smile] That said, I'm really glad that Idaho offers some reservoirs where no motors are allowed so that I can enjoy being in my float tube in peace.

"I was going to say "I bet Tubedude has some great stories", but I remembered you don't fish the weekends."

[#0000FF]There's plenty of STUPID to enjoy...even during the week days. But with more morons on the water during weekends there is a greater opportunity to encounter them.

As my hero Ron White says..."Ya can't fix stupid". But some of those folks seem bound and determined to chop down their family tree. Only problem is that they often take innocent bystanders down with them.

The lake has dropped much lower in the past and the fish survive just fine. Just makes it harder to find them and catch them. And there will be "adjustments" to the populations and the sizes of the different species.

Yeah, I'm not worried about the big puddle getting TOO low. It just seems that it didn't get this low last year, and with a better winter/spring this year... it just doesn't seem to add up.

Sunday, Aug 3 Observation
I dont usually get into the whole power squadron vs. not to power squadron because I am part of the power squadron. Love my boat and how fast I can get from one area to another. I try and be as respectful as I can

Anyway, needed to just get out of the house for a minute after spending my weekend staining my deck (should have paid to have it done) and headed out to the north dike at Utah Lake. Watched the water go from glass calm to roller whitecaps as the storm rolled in and saw two boats being towed in. One by a PWC and the other by another recreational boater. Saw a red kayak a drift that was picked up by one boat and followed the owner into the No Wake Zone and tried to make the swap there...poor decision. The very strong wind blew the boat right into the rocks.

I know I have personally saved several marriages helping couples trailer their boats.

No fishing report, just an observation

Help me out here, aren't they called WARNING buoys? Maybe I'm just being simple. They probably have some funny orange words written on them. I dunno - like "keep back" or "submerged object".
Some kids won't believe you when you tell them the tailpipe is hot enough to burn them, they just gotta try anyway. Or the double-dog dare to stick one's Tongue to a telephone pole mid-winter. Not that anyone would actually DO that.

Must say - what kids of "dare to be stupid" DO get into, and then they video themselves so they can post it you U-tube. Even these news casters can't help but laugh at the stupidity.

Had a bud back in HS who used to pull party tricks by lighting his farts on fire. Comes into school one day and announces "DO NOT try that with your pants off! Singed all the hair off my balls!".

How many look DOWN as they light their chest hair? Oh my. The newscast talks about one who went to the hospital because his lit his "junk" instead of chest hair. Complains that the videos don't show what happens after.
Q: What did you THINK would happen
A: I guess I didn't think.

And there you have it. Lack of thinking will cause you to light your junk on fire and video it for Youtube fame and fortune, oh wait - no fortune - just being famous for being a moron. Gotta have goals to achieve in life I guess!
