allergy relief?
#1
How do you guys/gals cope with allergies?Right now my nose is stuffy with all the weed pollen. Does eating less meat help? I'm trying to back off the meat to help the allergies as well as the waistline. Any replies would be appreciated.

I second the Zyrtec. I actually buy the generic, which I can often get for around $7 at the hospital pharmacy.

Does Zyrtec make you drowsy? I actually use Benadryl as a sleep aid.

It does make some people a little drowsy, but not like Benadryl. It is a second generation antihistamine whereas Benadryl is a 1st generation. The first generation ones cross the brain blood barrier more freely than second generation, and that is what makes you drowsy. The active ingredient in Benadryl is actually the same drug in Tylenol PM. I take a Zyrtec every morning with my breakfast and it doesn't cause me any problems.

Avoiding meat may help the weight but not allergies. Try zyrtec (certirizine) or Claritin
(loratidine). If it's not enough ( they don't wear off with continued use, it's just that higher pollen may worsen symptoms) the next thing to add is Nasacort nasal spray (it's over the counter now). Nasacort works far better in the long run for most people but can take a week or 2 to fully work. A decongestant (pseudofed plus others) is helpful if severely stuffed up and works very quickly.
You might also try local honey but since their isn't big bucks for Big Pharm in it the studies are limited.

I am right there with you on the allergies my friend. I have been a long time user of Zyrtec. I take it at night so if it does make me drowsy that is only a good thing. During the spring when my allergies are at thier worst, I also use Nasacort, also at night. It is amazing the difference. That stuff is expensive but worth every penny.

The worst part about Zyrtec is weaning my body off it in the late fall. There are several days that where I itch like crazy and it can be quite miserable. This year I'll try to come off them slower, I guess the body builds up some type of addiction. Doesn't matter to me, totally worth it.

I have used zyrtec and claritin generics. I also have used Quercetin on lighter days. It works quite well.

This last spring was the most miserable I have been since my allergies started so I decided to try some over the counter immune therapy. Local honey and Allergena drops. I have taken them twice a day for about 3 or 4 months now. A two ounce bottle lasts me at my reduced dose about two or three months.

So far I have not had any fall allergies and usually the fall ones started in Aug were worse than spring.

The drops are spendy at $25 a 2 oz bottle, but if I can build up my immunity through them it will be worth it. I will continue taking a small dose daily for a year or so.

They are NOT an immediate relief solution. They build up your immunity to pollens over time.

Good luck on finding some relief. Everyone is different, and it seems like you have find what works with your body.

EDIT
Allergena zone 7 is for Idaho. For Utah you should probably get zone 6

I don't know if there is anything to it but, locally harvested honey is rumored to help with allergies. My wife suffers badly from allergies, I just bought some off of ksl to try out. Unprocessed locally grown, I'm hoping it works out.

I just went through 3lbs of local honey so I'm going to get more in Santa Clara. It's real good honey but I hear it takes awhile to build up the immune system. It's a win-win situation. It takes good and it's good for the immune system.
