Does anyone grow a garden?
#1
I've been growing a lot of my own vegetables for years but it seems some years are better than others. Last year I grew my largest water melon to date, it was a 28 lbers, this year is totally different with my largest being only 10 lbs and the vines are already starting to die[Sad]. Starting to pick and freeze my largest carrots, picked a strange one today, pics of it attached. I'll add a pic of my garden, when I get a chance. Anyone want to share pics of their garden?

I've been planting a garden for a number of years now and have taken pride in the fact that I seem to be learning and improving every year. Then this year hit. Tomatos and cucumbers and Peppers have done real well but everything else has really struggled. Eggplant squash and melons have done nothing. My raspberries and Plums are awful this year also. Hoping it was just a bad year.

We grow a large garden every year too. I've harvested everything but some potatoes, carrots, and one last cabbage that is the size of a basketball. It was a good year overall, but the melons really struggles. We have a few cantelopes, but they are about softball size at the largest. Last year they were much larger. However, this summer was noticeably cooler, which really affects the melons.

I think you are right, every thing really took a nose dive once the weather cooled off.
Here are couple of pics of my garden, one is of whole garden from one end to the other, the other is my wife standing by some of our 7 to 8 ft tomato plants.

Nice garden Wiperhunter, I have grown a garden for years. Funny how one thing does well one year and another the next.

Here are a few photos taken in my garden in my back yard.

Looks like a great place to live for a gardener/angler. What lake is that in the background (if you prefer not to answer I understand).

Thanks Curt - I was going to try to dig up your old post on this, but here's a new one.
Hadn't gardened for a lot of years, spent all my 'spare' time fishing. New home, time to start fresh - and grow fresh!

I have some Facebook albums, but I'll post some direct here for non FB users.

My cool weather crops like spinach and all the lettuce varieties did really well in the spring. Snow and sugar snap peas just did average. But my warm weather crops like tomatoes and squash can't begin to match last summer's bounty. But last summer was the best for those in 16 years at the same location. So yeah I think the warm weather crops aren't doing as well this year with the cooler summer overall.

Funny, this year has been better for us than in years past. My wife's tomatoes, squash and zucchini ants are going nuts.

LOL, you are growing Ants? I'm not having any problems with my tomatoes, squash or zucchini, just my watermelons.

I have been growing my own garden for approximately 38 years. Attached are some pictures of the jungle (I mean garden this year). Can't keep up with the squash and tomatoes. Also had a bumper crop of nectarines and apricots.

You aren't kidding about a jungle, without rows, how do you even get in there without smashing some plants? What kind of squash are growing up your fence? Any watermelon plants? We have one peach tree and it has produced a huge crop this year. Last year we decided to count the peaches on our tree and we had over 520, and it is a small tree. This year, even though we did not count them, we have more than last year.

There are rows there. The squash, in particular, just got out of hand. Not sure which species is on the fence, I planted several and pumpkins.

No wonder you haven't been fishing much this year, nice looking garden John. Didn't you buy your house after the normal planting season this year? Was this garden area already in place before you bought your house? You must spend a ton of time on it, for it to look so good.

[font "Comic Sans MS"][#000000][size 4]Curt, being an avid and even passionate gardener, I really sat up and took notice when you put up a post about your garden. I love gardening, preserving salsa, pickles, tomato sauce, pickled jalapenos, and all the bounty that comes out of one's little plot of dirt. I also really love seeing other folks gardens too. I can't get enough of peaking through picket fences to see how someone else is putting their plots to use. So thanks to you and everyone else for putting up those great pics ... I love them.

42 years ago, when I first got interested in gardening, I always assumed that "gardening" was all about vegetable gardens. Then about 25 years ago, the light came on in my head that there was a lot more to gardening than just vegetable gardening. Since then, I have come to love gardening of many kinds.

This year, I decided to keep a few photographs of [#008000]"A Year In The Life Of My Garden"[/#008000]. Below are some of those pictures.

This first group of pics show the progression of just my small vegetable garden. Even though it is small, this year it produced enough tomatoes and peppers for salsa for me, some friends, family, and some neighbors. Between all of us we put up 215 pints of salsa off these nine tomato plants!

You have a nice green thumb there. Our garden plot is nothing more than an 8 x 12 area.

You were not kidding about your yard and garden being on the cover of a magazine, very impressive. How do you even have time to work or fish[Wink]. Thanks for sharing your pics with us Ralph, I think I'll just go in the corner and cry now[Sad]. I think for me to ever have a garden like that, it would really cut into my fishing time, I'm up to 77 fishing days so far this year. One question, do you trim the tops of your tomato plants so they won't grow so tall? Mine grow over 7 ft tall every year, no matter what type I plant. Also, do you add some type of fertilizer to your garden, if so what is it?

Wow, looks like your watermelons have not had a problem this year, is this in Utah or Cal? Wish I had a pond like that in my back yard. Thanks for sharing your pics.
