Float tubing powell?

Hey folks,

Due to some unfortunate circumstances my dad's elk hunt next week got cancelled, so I'm considering a powell trip as its replacement! The catch is, I've only got my pontoon boats and my elantra to get me down there...so I'm looking for some opinions on whether it's worth my time. I've been thinking of two spots close to parking that may be productive, namely Stanton Creek area and possibly Good Hope via blue notch. Having never driven the blue notch road, do you guys think a 2wd car could make it close to the lake? Thanks for your input!

I haven't fished Powell from a tube. I have fished it several times from shore, though. I have always managed to catch fish, even from well-used areas like those around the marinas at Bullfrog and Wahweep. In fact, several of the biggest stripers I've caught were taken from shore and off of marina docks.

I would choose a Lake Powell fishing trip over any other water in the state even if I were limited to shore or dock fishing.

I say go for it, but I don't think you need to put your car at risk to try to get somewhere remote.

I probably should also mention that night fishing off of the marina docks with a submerged light is an epic fishing experience--when it works.

You can find information about it on the Waynes Words web site. I've done it at both Bullfrog and Wahweep with success. The catch is that conditions must be just right.

I've probably tried it 10 times and it worked three of the 10. But those three trips were some of the most exciting and fun fishing experiences ever.

One good thing to worry about is how low the water level is this year so if your going for bass good luck finding nice rocky boulders.

The Blue Notch road will chew your Elantra up and spit out little pieces, even when the water is up. Forget that !!

Stanton Creek would be a good choice as you have good access and great fishing. You can also launch on Sail Boat beach just below the big parking lot and fish some of the long points towards the mouth of Bullfrog from there.

Should be a fun trip !!! Be careful of the wind and wear your life jacket !!

Sure, why not, but be careful.

I second the no go on Blue Notch.

Wear your PFD, carry a flag like skiers use and one of those air horns to ward off boaters who may not being paying attention. Fish early as the W tends to come up in the afternoon.

I also agree with the docks, although I have been luckier than one in three times. Last time I had to set a limit of 100 fish on my son so we could go back to camp and get some sleep.

Remember, you can chum for stripers using anchovies at Powell, sometimes other fish show up to take advantage of the chum, that's not your fault.[]

Night time cat fishing can be spectacular and keep plenty of SMB, they want you to.
