Currant Creek/Strawberry 10-12-2014
#1
My buddy and I went fishing today up to Currant Creek. Arrived early at the lake and encountered very high winds and blowing snow. We fished for a couple of hours and caught one small rainbow which we released to fight another day. I also hooked into a very big fish that jumped out of the water and broke the line. I am not sure if it was a cutthroat or a tiger trout but it hit my gold and red spotted Lil Jake lure. After we were finally blown off current creek we headed down to Strawberry to see if conditions were better down there. On the way down we ran into five moose, two bulls, two cows and a baby. The were together in a herd and I had never seen them do that before. Every time I see one of these animals I am amazed at how big they really are. When we arrived at Strawberry the wind was howling. We were at the Chicken Creek parking lot questioning our sanity to try and fish in this weather. The wind was blowing at least 35-40 miles per hour. We decided to give it a try. We fished for about 45 minutes before we were blown off of Strawberry as well. However, in that 45 minutes I was able to land a respectable rainbow. I hooked him on a Rainbow Rapala and he was hooked pretty bad. I decided to keep this fish instead of letting it die a slow death in the lake. What a waste that would have been. With almost every cast from the shore at Strawberry we ended up dragging in moss. There is still a lot of moss to battle from shore.

Craziness, fishing in 35 mph winds! My fishing season is winding down for the year because I just can't do the cold. Those treble hooks on the Jake's, rapalas, and such can really do a number on fish. I caught one once where all three hooks were protruding from the fish's temple, as was the "stem" of the hook. I still can't figure out how that happened. It was as though the fish had swallowed the hook whole, then the hook came out (line first) through the cheek. But the line didn't go back into the mouth (as it should have if it were hooked that way). Anyway, good on you for realizing the fish would be better on your table.

I'm so happy that I end up cancelling my trip at strawberry today. When I saw the wind reports my eyes were wide open. Hope next weekend will be nice weather because I'm dying for a good fall trip.
