instead of going out and buying an ice-fishing rod, I was wondering if the girlfriends kid's rod would work. It's about the size of an ice-fishing rod, is a cool purple color with Scooby Doo on it, and has a closed-faced reel.
Will it do the trick or shall I go out and spend a few dollars on something specifically made for ice-fishing?

the rod would work just fine on them walleyes.
you will want to stay away from closed faced reels, espesialy if you are fisning out side in the open. the winding mechinism will collect water and will freeze up on you. Shakespeare dose make a close faced ice fishing reel, I have one but I shy away from it because I like their openfaced reels better. I have a dozen of them.
I dont know if I mentioned this to you or not, but if you take a 1 inch lath board notch out the ends drill a hole on one end sand it down tie on some line grab a hook bobber and sinker you will have all that the pro trout fisherman use. all for under 50 cents. I have 50 of these. I made a hundred and fifty of them but every one who tryed one and caught a fish wanted to keep it so I gave it to them.
any light weight open faced reel will do nicely on that scoby rod.

Hey DDR, What Dave says is right. Unfortunately the Shakesphere line of comic fishing poles are all enclosed face reels and they are incorporated into the handle of the rod itself.
There are many inexpensive rod designs out there that afford the flexibility and stamina that goes into making an icefishing rod what it is rated for.
If indeed you are targeting smaller species of crappie, trout or walleye, then a large pole isn't necessary. Just make sure you take the other necessary precations with the other tackle the you chose to use.

I have seen the uni line of rod conected to the reel products, open faced and if the rod snaps off the game is over,
I havent seen the uni rod and reel combo in the scoobie line yet. I have shakspears comercial catilog, I will have to look again to see if they have that modle still available.
when I was looking at them last year I saw I had to buy rods and reels seperatly to save 25 cents on the combos.
hey thay do have the maliboo barbie rod and reel if any one is interested [angelic]

The Scooby rod and reel is a 2-piece outfit. I can remove the reel if needed. I did see GI Joe fishing tackle today. I think it was an 81 piece kit. Hehe.
Now that Malibu Barbie setup sounds like something I should use to win the upcoming ice-fishing contest here in the twin cities! People will laugh at me until I win the contest!

you are in good shape, just grab your spinning open face slap it on there go out and get some ice line to put on your spool.
that rod is plenty stiff enough to pull in a 12-15 pound walleye through a hole in the ice.
you will need a gaft. that is a must for pulling in the big eyes and pike. a gaft is a hook on the end of a rod of some type. slip it under the gill and pull them up through. if you dont you will end up breaking your line. if you are fishing in an area where there is 30 inches of ice, make sure you get a rod long enough to reach the bottom of the ice and have a foot to spare.
you can make it out of just about any thing. it dosnt have to be a sharp hook eather.
half the fun of ice fishing is making the gear you use to do the sport. ice fishing is truly a handy mans sport. I have never seen a sport use more duct tape than ice fishing.[cool]

I guess we got ripped off here in Cali. I looked at the local sporting goods and they all have a piece rod and reel. It was the same for the barbie, mickeymouse, and even the sponge bob.
You are right about the 1 piecers breaking and it's all over. I wouldn't mind getting a sponge bob and put a good shimano reel on it.

lol, not all of us are able to bend over any more.
and some of us dont like to get our hands cold.
and yet some of us are tired of feeding our fingers to the fish.... lol
you are right a gaft is in not nessary for able bodied anglers. at least not for walleyes, but a gaft sure makes the job easer. I recomend it to beginners and others like my self.
I do strongly recomend a gaft for pike and gar or at least a pair of deli cutters gloves so you dont get your hands shredded to chum bait by razor sharp pike teeth.
I am natorious for fishing for fish with liter lines.

the one peice line is a new product line.
the two peice is the older line. some stores still have them in stock and or special order them in two peice.
I think zebco also makes the 2 peice cartoon line.
in my 2003 catalog all I can find is the one peice.
there is a line of cartoon rods and reel units.
there is buggs bunny, taz and tweety, including a line of products such as coolers tents fishing vest minnow dipper and mini tackle box. and lets not forget the colapsable lawn chairs.
next is the scooby combos same as above but a colapsable lawn table is added with two built in can holders.
then comes the matel, barbie pink on chartruce and pink on baby blue with all the accesories above except the tent.
and then finaly shark and kid kits. rod reel units and tackle box only.
so you are correct that the new line is only one peice units. I was thinking of the 2002 catalog. I am sure there is still old product available on special orders only.
I will have to say for the price of that unit you can buy a new ice rod and put on your light open faced spinning reel. they retail at about 10-14 bucks and I have found new rods for under 10. and some nice ones at that.
but should some one have a one peice and the reel breaks. you can cut off the rod and glue it in to a 3/4 inch diamiter dowl, (tree branch) and tape your reel to the rod. the majority of the ice rods available dont have mounts for reels, they have to be taped on.

We have a local retailer here that has ice rods for sale right now. I'm surprised because we don't have any icefishing within 4 hundred miles from here.
There are 2 sizes available and both have the the slide on reel holders. I bought the 36in for those little blugills and tilapia and they also have a 28 inch. I guess that is the ultralight versioin for ice. Maybe I can use one of those for minnows.
The rods are selling for 9.99 each. They are pretty decent in design and they can handle some good weight.

here in the northern country, there are a multitude of rod brands, ranging in size from 18 to 42 inches and priced from 4 to 30 bucks each. size has nothing to do with price.

You got that right. Have you seen the Kencore line of rods??? They have a 36" rod for about 84 dollars. Ugly stick has one for around 50 buck for the same size. I fully understand that you are not paying by the foot, but for the brand name.

ooooh noooo,
I cant even aford to look at those rods.. my wallet hurts just thinking that they are out there.
to put it in perspective, its like going to a resturant and looking at a prime rib and eggs breakfast on a beens and tater budget.....
I mean if I had the money to blow, and I wanted to impress my buddies with out ever having to ever step out on the ice, that is the way to do it. but we as pro anglers know that it isnt the rod that catches the fish, its the angler and his ability to present his bait.

That's exactly why I bought an inexpensive ice pole here in CA. There is a little lake that I go to fish at and break in new equipment. Many anglers/harvester go there to rake in on the Tilapia. They use giant ocean poles rated for 50 or 100lb fish and 40 to 80lb line.
All that just to pull in little 3/4 to 1lb fish. My son and I on the other hand go with ultra light gear. They laugh at us and smirk, saying "What do you expect to catch with those puny little twigs"? We don't reply.
Our only response is a hook up after hook up and staying busy for the 2 or 3 hrs that we are there. Occasionally we turn to watch the other guys that were talking so loudly about our little willow branches, only to see them mad cause they aren't catching a thing and TubeNtoo and I are haveing all the fun with our little twigs.
TubeNtoo has a little ice pole that he got some years ago from TubeDude. He caught a 1 1/2 lb Tilapia one day. That is the biggest one that I have ever seen come out of that lake. Needles to say, everone else on the lake was in dismay on how a young boy with a small rod beat out all the ocean poles with heavy riggs.

that is true, liter lines = more hookups.
I fish beside a couple oldtimers here on my lake. I dont do to shabby with my 2 pound test line. they conceftivly pull in more heads than I do with their one pound test line.
I eather havent lost the ecitment yet or I just havent developed the finess of using one pound test line. I snap them about every time. well it could be every time I put on a one pound test line I hook in to a 8 pound bass, I guess I will never know how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsieroll pop.[laugh]
the old timmers say you are doing good if you are landing fish twice the weight of your line test. I dont do to shabby with my 2 pounder, pulling in 2 pound crappie, 3 pound bass and 4-5 pound pike. the old timers I see pulling in nice size crappie gills and perch, but never do I see them pulling in bass. at least nothing big enough to take a picture of. their lines ususaly snap too.
pull in a 1 pound fish on a one pound test line is a feet
pull in a 2 pound fish on a one pound test your are a pro
pull in a 3 pound fish on a one pound test line, buddy you are a fishing god[angelic]

Back when I was living in Utah, we used to fish a place called Willard Bay. It was notorious for the good size crappie and had its reputation as well for carp.
My Dad, brother and I all had our fair share of carp one day while fishing for for crappie with 2lb line on ultra lite gear. The smallest carp that we caught was barely 16lb and TubeDude managed to get one that was 25lb. It took about 1/2 hr to land it but he sure got the respect from the other anglers that were there that day.
All in all we pulled out about 30 carp. Many of them were 20lb or better. I was just 13 at the time and learned alot about finesse. It is definetely fun to play on light tackle.
It wasn't so easy with the cats though. We had to use 8lb out of the float tubes back then. We would usually do early morning (3 to 4am on the water) shots for the cats. Back then they would usually run from 10 to 28lbs. It was always fun to hook into a big cat on the tube and just wave good bye to my dad as I promised him that I would be back in a short while.
