Current Creek Reservoir Ice
#1
My son-in-law went to CC on Friday and did pretty well on 5" of ice. Should be a whole lot thicker now...just a long drive.

We hit CC Friday and Saturday as well, we must have met your son-in-law because we were the only guys out there other than two other guys right by the dam. A group of 8 of us fished close to the dam in 4-20' of water and the fish were not biting at all! We switched up lures and depths and it wasn't until about 9am that we started getting a few bites. We ended up with about 20 fish between all of us but usually early ice on CC leads to 40 or 50 fish days. Guess we'll try again soon. Some pictures below.

Good luck and Happy Fishing!

Thanks for sharing the pictures and report.

It looks like most of your fish were cutthroats. I don't understand how come there are not bigger fish in CC. It doesn't really get all that much pressure and there seems to be plenty of food in there for them.[:/]

There are actually some really big fish in CC and we caught a few while we were up there but didn't have a chance to snap a pic and we always let the bigger fish go to be caught another day. Earlier this year I caught a 6lb tiger out of CC and have caught many fish in the 3-5lb range, they're just a little harder to find. There is plenty of food for them in the lake and I think with the next couple of years that res will be a trophy fishery.

How is the road up to the lake? Still wash boardy and slow going? Do they plow it? I haven't been up there in many many years and I have never ice fished it. I'm planning on heading up Friday. Thanks for any info

They plow it up to the ranch house and then after that you're on your own. Road wasn't bad but you'll definitely want a 4 wheel drive vehicle to make it up there. The road is snow packed and be sure to stay in the tracks already created, some of the snow drifts to the side are really deep and you'll be digging yourself out if you venture off into one. If you're heading up Friday we'll see you up there, we're heading back up again to see if we can find some better fish. Good luck and happy fishing!

Thanks spinmaster, should I bring a snowmobile? would I dare drive it on the ice? How long does it take to get from Hwy 40 to the lake?

There were some guys last weekend with sleds on the ice on the far side, but I would not recommend it. It's 17 miles from hwy 40 to the res and usually takes about 25-30 minutes depending on how fast you want to drive that snow packed road. Smile If you bring a sled you can get around to the far side of the res and fish where very few have been this year. With that, we talked to the guys that were on sleds on the far side and they only caught 2 fish all day. Hope this helps, good luck and be safe!

Is there a good place to park where they stop plowing the road and take a sled up from there?

Thanks for the ice report! I noticed that Strawberry was mostly capped the other day and figured Currant would be ready.

gofish, there are HUGE fish in Currant Creek Res. The biggest tiger trout I've seen took a swipe at my offering once.

Most trips leave me with at least 1 tiger over 20", usually more. The cutts also get really nice and the rainbows have put on weight.
