Bear Lake Cisco run
#1
I know that the official Cisco Disco is scheduled for Jan 24th, but I was wondering if they have started to show up at all yet? It seems last year the run went from a week or more before the disco, with the height not coinciding with the festivities.

The fishing report posted by Darrin on fishingbearlake.com seemed to indicate that it could start as soon as this weekend.

Any update would be appreciated.

Not to hijack this thread however I want to try getting the Cisco and was curious of what size of net to use and any advice on getting some. Also if they are good to eat. PM's are welcome as well. Thanks

Check the Utah Fishing Forum. They seem to cover Bear Lake Area a lot more.

Oops. It looks like you have.

@ avidfisher - I learned last year that a typical boat net with a longer handle will not cut it, the fish just slide through the holes. Sportsmans warehouse sells some nets with steel mesh and flat bottoms that I used last year and worked well. Pugmires in Garden City sells a better version, but you should check their hours and stock on hand before heading up empty handed. Don't forget the neoprene waders, you need to get out there a ways to get into the schools hot and heavy.

Cisco fishing is a blast. I have made it a must do on my calendar every year.

avidfisher,

Dress warm and walk as far as you dare. I heard any net works. Stand still.

I've dipped the Cisco for a bunch of years. You want a net with a nice long handle. Stiffer is better. Also remember that the opening in the net must be less than 18 inches - at least that is what is says in the Utah regs.

"When fishing for Bonneville cisco at Bear Lake, the opening of your dipnet may not exceed 18 inches. If you’re dipnetting through the ice at Bear Lake, there is no restriction on the size of the hole you can drill in the ice."

These nets are the best kind:

They have a nice metal mesh that is small enough for even the smallest Cisco, and the telescoping octagonal handles are stiffer. But, they are a bit pricey.

You can get round telescoping handles as well for a bit less:

Try on Amazon. They may have them cheaper and have faster/free shipping.

You probably even still have time to order one before the Cisco run.

I was able to get up to Bear Lake for a snowmobile ride this last weekend. The lake is still clear of ice and according to the weather reports it will probably stay that way through the disco. I did not get the chance to check cisco beach to see if they had started to come in yet, but I will be back up this weekend (1/17) with the waders and net and send an update.

Thanks for all the info. I hope to get up there next week. Not sure why but it sounds fun. Please post if you think the run is over as it is along drive. Thanks

It won't be over on the 24th. I live here at bear lake and can assure you that the Cisco run will be full bore during the disco. It's a fun time.
If you come to it be sure to come over to garden city for the polar plunge at the state park marina. IT starts at about 11 and the jump is at noon. There will be a chili cook off and tasting and it's free admission, free contest entry and free chili samples. Oh, free hot chocolate too!
There will be a biggest Cisco contest that is free to enter and is limited to the first 49 applicants to register at Cisco beach. There will be two separate categories, one for adults and one for kids with 1-3 place prizes for each. The measuring will be done at the marina on the other side of the lake during the plunge and prizes awarded there.
We hope to see you there having fun with the rest of us.
For more info on the day's events and contests you can go to www.bearlake.org/events.

Still no cisco coming in over the weekend of the 17th. Beautiful weather after the storm on Friday. Cisco beach was completely free of ice and there were a few brave souls out on boats over the weekend. Can't wait to net a few next Saturday.

I will be up there at the butt-crack of dawn tomorrow. Going to try out my new floating five gallon bucket so I don't have to haul the fish to shore when chest deep in the drink. (took a couple of slips last year and almost dunked myself)

My truck has BFT sticker on rear window. May only be there long enough to catch my limit- the sleds are also in need of a ride this weekend. [cool]
