It gave me a better idea when the ice may by ready to walk on but the air temp needs to be watched, and why it grows slower after 4 ". It is pretty close to what I noticed this year at strawberry but I didn't account for any wind. Wind with cold temps helps to remove heat from deep lakes. I will post the link on the Idaho board.

I'll add my thanks for a great read. My favorite line was "Don't use your truck as a testing tool."
I wonder if the charts can be used in reverse, to calculate the reduction of ice thickness over NON- freezing days. Such as those we've been having. My inclination is that if the average temp has been above freezing for several days, and the ice was minimal to begin with, we ought to stay the hell off. I'm talking ALL our local lakes, including Mantua. [signature]

That is good info. What I've found works for me is to find a big, heavy, fishing partner and walk 20 yards behind him. So far it has been effective.

Ahh, the ice version of the Polish Mine Detector, eh? I like the way you think.
(No apologies to anyone who objects to a Polish joke. I'm of Slavic descent, so I have a right.) [signature]

I think I'll be wearing a life jacket when I venture out tomorrow just in case. ...... My head going underwater is my biggest fear, I've gone through the ice out duck hunting quite a few times without my waders on and even though I've experienced that cold shock a few times, there's not much you can do if you start huffing and puffing and your heads already underwater, it'd be over in a flash!

Thank you for sharing. I particularly found it interesting that wind (after the ice has formed) can help the ice grow faster than calm weather.

I prefer no flotation to facilitate distance to gain momentum in underwater swimming like this:
