Mantua Report
#1
Great day for perch on mantua. Hit the ice about 9:00 and walk out from the ramp about 100 yards. Tapped the first hole and activity on the bottom in 15' of water. BUT....no bites. I thought "here we go" it's echo all over again.

Walked over towards the outlet and talked with a guy. He was marking fish at 11' but no takers. Walked a bit farther north and tapped a couple of holes, marked fish and NO takers....Cus words!!!!

Decided to head back out to deeper water. Went back to where I started, tapped hole, marked fish........THEN, wham!!! A massive 4"er.

Decided to set up the second pole with a couple of ratsos tipped with perch eyes.
I kept jigging a flicker on the other pole.

Well......then the fun started!!!!! I started catching perch, sometimes doubles. Had a blast till the wind picked up. To much going on with the poles to set up the tent, so I just let my fingers freeze.

The bite quit about 3:00 so I packed it up and headed home for a perch fry.
Ended up with 30....oh and one 16" rainbow which I sent back home.

Nice fish, thanks for the report! Perch is yummy when you can actually get substantial amounts of meat. Perch fish tacos all day.

Great to hear that you had a great time.... after hunting around a bit. My wife and I were up there last Sunday and had a blast. We only caught 4 average rainbows, but it was enough to get her hooked, so to speak. We were debating between Mantua and Strawberry tomorrow. Knowing that the ice is still safe up there may influence our decision. I was worried about it with the warmer temps we've been having.

Thank you for posting the update. That's pretty cool that you ran into a fellow BFT member up there. I've always wanted to cross paths with someone like that, but it hasn't happened yet.

Best wishes and stay safe out there!

[Wink] Ya know, when one posts a picture of a pile of fish on the ice, it is customary to include some common everyday object for scale. [:p]

That way we know if 4"-ers were all you caught.

Sounds great. Hope Mantua fishing is recovering from the first three weeks.

Oh, and BTW, what is a "flicker"? Not one I'm familiar with.

Not sure if you saw the water bottle at the top of the pict. They ranged from 4" to 121/2". Average about 9".

A flicker is like a Swedish pimple or cast master. A blade and small treble hook. Got it at Sportsman's. It looked like it might work so I grabbed one.

I did miss that! I guess it looked like ice.

Most of the perch I catch would fit in that waterbottle, headfirst.
