Cisco Disco bustdown
#1
Welp - made it up at dawn, we weren't alone. But someone forgot to invite the Cisco to the dance. So we all dressed for the party, waded and wandered, and wondered, and waited.

My bud managed one scoop, so we were spared the skunk, but I swear he was about the only up and down the beach, we had several spectators come to see what they SHOULD look like. Our neighbors lil' boy was kind enough to count them for us, several times (gave him a chance to get his fingers slippery! Way cute)

Then my fish-mate decided to try the polar plunge, maybe to see if he could get a better view from underwater. The waves had kicked up quite a bit, wind wasn't "bad" but "steady" - so cold.

Looked up and down the elbow to elbow shoreline, and saw few nets raised with squiggles.

Maybe if the sun had just cracked through for a minute?

It's too bad that it didn't turn out better for the fisherman. Did you come over to the plunge after to see the craziness? That was kinda fun.
My two girls and my son and I managed to dip about 40 between the four of us, but we went off waaay away from the crowd to find them in close enough for the girls to get them. It paid off too because my oldest girl won the first place biggest fish and my younger daughter won the second place fish in the kid category. My son won the second place fish in the adult catagory and I sucked with just a wuss fish! Still, the prizes that my kids brought home totaled 150.00 in gift cards to sportsmans warehouse and a 60.00 two way radio set...$210.00 total between them all. They were thrilled to say the least.
Yesterday the Cisco were in really good and most were dipping limits, but I really think that the army of fisherman spooked them. It always seems to be the case during no ice years. I have no doubt that they will be back in tomorrow thick.
But I agree with you, it was pretty much a bust for most and that is just too bad. I hope everyone found a way to find some fun in it anyway and I hope they come back within a week and get into them better.
Oh, and I lost in the chili cook off so my kids are gloating their win and reveling in my loss[Smile]

Yes, tough day for me also. Managed three Cisco is all. Waves crashing in made it really tough to see. Thanks to Scott and his crew for preparing some great eats and Dina for the great scones. As always, a good time.

Hey Yote your making me feel a little better, I only got two, but my bro got a limit and his son got two and my bro in law managed a nice 22" cut. It was fun but they were sure spooky. Once you dipped a net with fish twenty guys would run over and crowd around you and it did scare them away. So we hit Hyrum after for a perch fix. Managed 18 fish there with two bows and everything was small. I did have a real nice bow on but let it get away trying to get it to come up the right hole. Fun day. Later J

Haha Jeff, that really gives away the size of the perch seeing them next to the ciscos. Come to think of it I have never seen a mix of ciscos and perch in the same pic.[Smile]

Yup those 6" perch are not very big and took me forever to fillet and get ready for a pot of TD chowder. Think it will work without mushrooms? Forgot them. I cut the recipe in thirds since the fish were about a third of the size I wanted. Plus my girls won't eat fish so it's up to me to polish it off. Anyway Mike you guys had a great party over there today. We gave up on the chilli cook off and went home but sure looked like it would have been a good time. Thanks for all you and Scott did. Later J

Bearlakefishguy usually posts his fry recipe at some point. You'd like it - dip the whole fish in batter and fry it whole - bones and all!
They're a real oily fish, I'd bet catfish would just love them, but you're only allowed to use them as bait at BL.

Never did make it over to the pavilion to try a scone. Kinda hard to recognize anyone when they're all bundled up. Glad you got into some, and got your perch fix on. Seems like Hyrum is still working on a rebound. Have to head over there or up to Porky sometime.

If you're gonna poke the pig, gimme a heads up!

Hey thanks Jeff, scott really worked his tail off to put a good Cisco disco together, he's great! We've got a good crew over here to try and put the polar plunge together and continually add more fun activities for all. It's fun to be a part of organizing it and watching others enjoy themselves when it's all said and done.
Girls won't eat fish??? Better get 'em into therapy quick! I can't get mine to eat beef, but they love fish and game...go figure!

I was too busy freezing in the pond waiting for Cisco to get a scone but I feel bad I missed it. We were fishing right next to the shelter they were using so I should of got one.
As far as Hyrum perch recovery goes, I don't think they are growing, in fact they seem smaller than last year, but there seems to be good numbers of them this year.
When I head to the pig I'll give you a ping so we can make a full on attack. Probably the week after next is my tentative plan. Later J

Sure seems like you're making a bigger event each year, I couldn't believe the crew this year. Very successful event.
Boy sounds like you got all the luck having a family that likes what you catch. Wish my crew would even try it, I think they would be surprised how good it is. Too spoiled I guess. Well off to put the chowder together. Later. J

Me and my son had a great time! We only caught 10 cisco. I had a leak in my wader and lost all feeling in one foot. I watched 2 guys fall in trying to net cisco which really made an impression on my son with the language he heard. We ate some really great food and met some very nice people. I thought if we would have went to a more remote area we could have caught plenty but it is great event. Scott and that crew does such a good job! Thanks to them.

Glutton for punishment, I think my pal REALLY wanted to get some good use out of his new net. So we booked up again this morning.
Calm conditions, but foggy, despite the clear skies above. But - we just a tad fewer folks there, and able to pretty much stay on shore, and have the fish come in to us, we managed out limits. It wasn't fast, but worked.
Fish were spooky, but were moving up and down the shoreline. Got to appreciate the wire net more when our neighbors were fighting their soft nets, guess they are a lot harder to lift.

Everyone says it's lots easier when there's ice.
