Fly Fishing Film Tour - Salt Lake City
#1
Just a reminder to everyone that the Fly Fishing Film Tour (aka F3T) is stopping at The Depot in SLC Thursday February 19. This is a great event, you don't want to miss it.

I went. What a waste. A commercial, left-wing, attempted brainwashing about global doom and gloom warming, pity for Viet Nam veterans, and saving the world. Films included the merits of carp fishing, the political history of Cuba, and how to cuss and throw your rod in a tantrum like a 10 year old just because you lost a fish or missed a strike.

The total of several hours of videos contained about 20 minutes of actual fly fishing. Maybe 10 minutes of good stuff. Lots of narrative jabber, scenes of bubba stringing his rod, sitting on the SUV bs'ing, or driving to a fishing spot. Too much boat riding in the saltwater clips. Too much "expert" philosophy that was half full of it.

A raffle and sales pitch by USAC seemed worthy. Hopefully they raised more needed funds to fight the fight. A short update on the two law suits was given. Some of the films had good footage of some classic "takes", but again, just a few seconds here and there.

A festival of fly fishing films it was not. I can find higher quality and more stunning video on the net in a variety of places.

For someone just starting out, the repeated narrative about how great the holier than thou activity of fly fishing is such a spiritual and religious experience might be motivating. Anyone who has done a little doesnt need to pay to be told that. Some of us are way past that. I didn't pay for some post-movie guys to tell me how fly fishing was the end-all of life.

The venue was a club with bar stools for seating, and there was a continuous background noise that sounded like a nightclub in the center of the room.

I wont ever attend another one from this outfit. Your mileage may vary.

Sounds like I made the right decision on going to a concert instead of that terrible fly video festival.

Personally I thought it was a lot of fun and it showed fly fishing is about a lot more than just the fish. Although I do enjoy IF4 much more than the 3FT.

I had a blast! Hang out with buddies, drink a couple beers, watch a little fish porn? What's not to love? But I am also one of those liberal nuts who believes global warming is real (because, you know, science) and thinks that our vets deserve more.

You also missed a great after party, complete with an "iron fly" tying contest for the ages.
