After a slippery trip up to porcupine, I drove over to Hyrum. I didn't bring a pole but the ice was at least 5in thick straight out from the boat ramp at the state park. The fisherman I talked to said there were plenty of fish close to the ramp but the bigger ones were out about 500 yards. I plan to go drown a few mealworms up there tomorrow. If anyone wants to say Hi we'll be the ones in a big green dome tent.

Here's a "sort of" report of my "sort of" trip today. It was very abreviated because of a few things. I took two of my kids this morning, big mistake!!! I told them it would be extremely cold but they assured me they could handle it. My older son handled it well but my daughter was shivering badly after only 30 mins so I had her get up and start walking around which helped some.
Anyway the short of it I "fished" for a grand total of 20 mins by the dam, we were there for about an hour and fifteen minutes. Fish were plenty thick on the locators sidefinder up right under the ice. My son had one and lost it at the hole, no other action for us. Ice at the dam was over 8" but the shore was thinner, use caution.
Going without kids next weekend, time to catch some fish!!!!!!! Not fiddle with frozen kids and tangled line. (not really mad but just frustrated, fishin with kids is usually great).

SKUNKED! I was hoping to give a great report on Hyrum, but don't have much to say. All I can say is 'find the right spot' I bet no one has heard of this idea, but it will be very helpful. I can't tell you the right spot, but I can tell you one spot not to fish.
We were around the middle of the lake. I don't know the depth, but it seemed like at least 50 feet. 4 of us fished for about 4 hours with quite an assortment of tackle. We got 2 nibbles and not even one bite. I want to try different spots.
On our way back, we saw several people by the boat ramp. Maybe the fishing was better there - we didn't talk to anyone. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to fish? Thanks.

I am not familiar with Hyrum, but for most waters (unless you are fishing for mackinaws you were in too deep of water). My experience on waters that I am not extremely familiar with is to follow the crowd. If people gather in one area and you don't see most of them leaving after a short time, you can bet they are doing ok. Also, don't hesitate to go exploring and visit with other folks. That is one of the pleasures of ice fishing is that you can visit out on the ice and learn how others are doing.

Most guys fish by the ramp because it isn't far to walk and the perch are in there a lot of times. I talked to John at Custom Sports and he told me one of his customers was out and couldn't keep the 9" rainbows off his line. They were fishing the east end in 9 ft of water. Didn't say what they were using.
There are a ton of people out there today. The street by the gate of the swim beach is packed with vehicles. Maybe someone else will have a report later tonight. I'm headed out there tomorrow with the grand daughter. I'm taking the ice condo with a heater so she can run around and come in out of the cold and warm up. For anyone who's out there, I'll have a green Eskimo Quickflip III out on the ice. Come over and chat for a while.
