Anyone have an on/off switch spliced into the wiring of their pontoon motor? Any suggestions to turning off motor without having to turn it off on the throttle?

You possibly could run a relay from the Power cable to the battery but unclear why, on the Minkota you just turn the handle clockwise to start the motor then turn it counter clock wise to stop it. .... Are you using a gas powered motor ? Im [crazy]

If what you suggest is due to not being able to reach the handle to turn the throttle on or off, all you would need is an extension. I made a cheap one by using flexible conduit (the blue stuff out the electrical dept). I cut it to length so I don't have to reach back as far and attached it for the handle with two pipe clamps.

[#0000FF]I have been using the Bigfoot switch on the electric motors for my tubes for several years. Only about $20 and easy to rig. Just cut into the black wire on your motor and splice in the two wires of the switch on either end of the cut. Waterproofing with good shrink tubing or tape helps prevent problems.
I like these switches because they allow just pushing the button to start the motor for short moves. Or you can pull the lever into lock position for longer moves or trolling. When a fish hits you just flip the lever over and the motor stops. You just gotta be careful you don't mount the switch where you can rest your elbow on it...'cause it will scare the stuff outta ya when the motor suddenly kicks in when you're not expecting it. I did just as you describe and I tried every switch radio shack had and they all overheated or down right melted. They couldn't handle the draw even the biggest 50 amp they had. I ended up with an on/off light switch mounted to a pvc concoction I can stick in the pouch next to me. That switch is now 4 or 5 years old and works perfectly for what we do.

I have probably been using motors the longest here. Even back in the donut days (1980's).
TubeDude was the first to use that on/off switch here, but I built my own long before I knew those buttons existed..[laugh] Back in the early stages (1990's) I took the head off the motor and added more wiring. Put the head in the oar holder. Worked great. Later I got creative and built a remote box. Took the reo stat out of the head and glued it in a metal box. Then added a big radio knob. Had full control right at hand. I use a Maximizer motor now, so can't do this to them dang it. I also used a wire ribbon that was awesome. [signature] |
