My son and I went down to Delta yesterday and hit a couple of spots in the river to see what we could catch. A couple of observations first. 1. DMAD wasn't as low as I thought it would be. 2. The water is much warmer than I expected... More on that later.
We hit the pool right below the spillway at DMAD first and caught a couple of carp and a couple of perch. The perch were about 6" long so the were sent back to grow a little more. We were there for about an hour. We were able to see a couple of decent sized bluegill and a dinky LMB on the east side of the pool. From there, we went to my Dad's farm which is a little north of Gunnison Bend. It's an area where I misspent much of my youth. We used carp meat from the aforementioned carp along with worms and proceeded to catch a bunch more carp and a couple of small white bass. I had several good-sized catfish on, but wasn't able to land any of them.
All of this was during the middle of the day with the temp in the low 90's, much hotter than I like it.
As for the water temp, it feels much warmer than it usually does at the end of May. How do I know? Well, my son had a fish on, probably a carp but we didn't get a good look at it. It gets close to the bank and wraps him around some brush along the bank and breaks off.... but it is still hooked to the stick and it's not going anywhere. I lean over to grab the stick and attempt to pull it in when the bank gives way. Not a little piece of the bank just around where my feet are, but a section about a 7 feet wide and a foot deep. I go face-first into the water. It's only about 2 feet deep and the riverbottom is just muck, nothing hard. My phone is dead, which is the 3rd one I've drowned while fishing. My CZ-82 is soaked along with my holster and wallet. The camera, thankfully, was still on the bank by one of the tackle boxes.
Just judging by what the water felt like, its temp has to be in the mid 60's if not higher. We've gone swimming out there when it was colder than it felt yesterday.
If we had a chance to stay and fish in the evening, from 7 to about 10-ish, we probably would have done better. We were seeing what looked like panfish jumping around the brush on the other side if the river when we were getting ready to leave. Probably bluegill or green sunfish.
Anyway, it was a good day. A little sunburnt (even with sunscreen), some of Mom's home-cooking, and an unplanned swim but no worse for wear.
