I started tying flies again, and was wondering if there is anyone else who enjoys this hobby who would like to sponsor a class with me. I'm sure there are many of us here who tie flies, and many more who want to learn. Comments?

I know a few fly fishermen who would like to get together to learn new stuff and refine their handiwork.

Great, we should organize a time and place and everyone who wants to learn some new techniques or learn how to start out can come. I've got 3 vises, and a lot of tools, feathers, furs, threads, etc.

I'm just a beginner and have a nine year old daughter who is much better than I am she is like a sponge when it come to this type of artwork and can generally duplicate anything she is taught. I'd be willing to drag her along to promote her growth in the noble art of flytying. I also need to practice myself. We've got some stuff we can bring along, she has all the tools she needs and her own vice I will need one.

This would be a great thing to get your kids into, so bring them along. If there is anyone else who would like to render their knowledge and equipment, just PM me. I'll see what I can do as far as the time/place goes and keep everyone informed.

To be quite honest, I don't even use my fly rod that often, but it's fun to tie flies.

I take my daughter on Saturdays that I don't fish and she sits with Buddy Knight at Sportsman's Warehouse in SLC, and they tie flies together. He has taught her a lot and I just enjoy seeing her in action.

I too will want to join you in flytying. I'm a beginner so will look to the others for guidance. I have my own stuff (tools and materials) for the most part, but need instruction desperately. I've never caught a fish on my own fly and I must have this happen before I die (hopefully in the far distant future).

I'll bring some of my fly tying books to our little class. A great book for beginners is the Jack Dennis book. It's got lots of flies for beginners to experts.

[ ]I've been trying my hand at this. I have no trouble flanking the fly, but I can't get the piggin string on one leg so I can finish with two wraps and a hooey.
Seriously, I would like to learn if I can make it to the class. I have some/most of the gear I would need. I have a vise, bobbin, some fur, some thread, cement, scissors, hemostats, flashabou, marabou.... A "What to bring if you have it" list would be very helpful for those if us that really don't know much of anything about tying flies, but have bought some gear hoping to learn someday. I know I'll need feathers, hooks, and probably different colored thread than the white I have, but I wouldn't know what to get for what we would be making.
Schedule the class, and I'll do what I can to be there. Thanks Moby_Dick and FlyFishingMoose for offering your skills and time.

I just got all the gear I need from the father in law for christmas. I just need practice on how to use it. I would be interested in a class if there is one. Thursday evenings would be best for me.

Hi, new officially registered member here. I took a fly tying class from Dave Scadden (yes, THE Dave Scadden) about 20-some years ago, when they tied rocks to hooks
Anyways, I was at Sportsman's last Saturday (shopping for my birthday present). They had some sort of fly tying demonstration going on, which is cool, except that it was right in front of the pontoons! The nerve. Anyways, I don't know if they have formal classes, or just a seat of your pants sort of demonstration from time to time, but it'd probably be worth a looksee. The clandestine basement meeting sounds fun too.

yeah, the "boat" people I know hate willard because of all the bugs. I love willard because I can fish anywhere I want without being bothered by boats!
Even when I had a boat, I could go out all day and not worry about crashing into another boat. Pineview's another story, and hyrum's just ridiculous. I resisted "joining" this board so long because one of the reasons I go fishing is to get away from everybody. I avoid camping during the 4th of July week, and the other major holidays. I try to not go shopping the day after Thanksgiving. I don't usually go see movies on their opening weekend. But I always know I can find solitude at Willard, even if I try just a little bit. I just can't remember the last time I caught a fish there. dammit.

Sportsmans has a guy there to tie flies as a demo and if you have a pattern you want him to tie he will for a nominal price I think it 85 cents. I take my daughter there on the Saturdays that I am not fishing so she can learn from Buddy Knight. He will set up a vise next to him and they will tie for hours if I let them.

Here is a list of the things I feel are the basics for fly tying. If anybody has any of these things, or is planning on obtaining these things, please bring them to our class. I'll be posting time/date shortly. If anyone thinks of anything to add to the list, please do so.
-fly tying vise
-bobbins
-fly thread (red, black, brown, green)
-hackle pliers
-various feathers (duck, pheasant, goose, almost anything can be used)
-rooster capes (assorted colors)
-chenille (asst. colors)
-rabbit fur
-squirell fur
-head cement
-fly hooks (various sizes)
-any other furs, feathers, threads, tapes, or tools you think would be useful.

There already is a fly tying group that gets together each month. I don't attend because they meet up in Mountain Green, that's a little further than I care to drive, especially when I don't get home until 6:30. There is also a group that gets together in SLC every month.
I would love to get in on another fly tying group, as long as it were a little easier for me to show up. Where do you plan on doing this? SLC, Davis Co, Ogden?
Oh yea, there is a tying demo every Saturday at Sportsman's in Riverdale, it is from 10-12.

Thanks for the info. Probably Davis county, that way it is central for everyone from salt lake to ogden.
