Hit the lake Saturday afternoon around 4pm. Spent several hours chasing shad in the wash. Not a lot of bait in the net when i finished but got several healthy gizzard shad. About a dozen in the 8-10 inch range and two monsters over 17 inches.
Started fishing up near boxcar under lights, was there about 4 hours with steady action. 18 in the boat, half from live bait, half from anchovies. Was dinks at first but right around 9pm we were hitting 3-4 lb fish pretty often. I had one heavy rod out with a 10 inch gizzard on it, letting him swim around in about 40 ft. After 3 hours landed a healthy 7 lb striper.
Once it died down we headed over near the intake tower, slow trolling meat from the gigantic gizzard, the medium sized (8-9 inch) live gizzards and some anchovies. Landed 20 or so fish before 5 am. Unfortunately I didnt get anything in the boat off the live gizzards, had some major hits by some big fish but I think I was using the wrong style hooks and they would get away. Hooks would be embedded in the shads head (nose hooked) and they would spit them out after a few minutes of fighting. Some really big fish though that got away.
In the end fishing came in spurts, we had double or back to back hook ups and then it would die of for a bit. Great day on the water, very little wind and cool weather.
On a side note, just a reminder for everyone to be very careful about the water releasing at the intake tower. Did it once while we were there. I was anchored about 25 foot south of the tower but when that water came out and the breeze grabbed it we got soaked. It was actually pretty funny but i had just trolled a little close to that area not 10 minutes before and that would have been crappy. So please be careful if you fish that area.
I have a few pics that i'll post up later.
