A friend and I borrowed his fishing partners boat and we made a quick trip to Lake Weiss Friday for a little pre-fishing for a few tournaments he and I have coming up over there. We got started early, put in before daylight and started fishing asap. Caught fish early on flats with cranks, but no real size except the bonus catfish of the day on a squarebill. Nothing like the 12 pound cat when fishing a crankbait.
After the cranking experiment we headed to docks and found one where we caught five, including one over 3 and another one that was just over 4.5 pounds. As anyone else would do, we hit the next 6 docks in the same area and never sniffed another keeper, so we tried a hump back in Spring Creek. Caught a couple of small fish on a crankbait, then headed to some different docks. Found another dock where we caught 3 keepers including a 3.5 spot and a 4 plus largemouth. Caught the spot in less than 3 feet of water, caught the largemouth in over 10 feet of water. Fished three more docks in the area, nothing, and moved down lake to some more docks nearer deep water. Found one dock where I caught a 6.04 largemouth and my partner caught one over 5 on the next dock, but then went five more with no bites until I hooked a nice fish that sawed me off on a dock post.
Moved around a few more times after that, caught a few more fish, and both me and my pard lost two good ones at the boat fishing a deep point and a river channel.
Caught fish on texas rigged worms and creature baits, shakeyhead, jig, crankbaits and chatter bait. Water temps were in the high 80's and the fish wanted the bottom baits slow today. Best fish came on worms and jigs. A very good day on the water, and only saw two other boats fishing, we got off the water right at 12:30 and our best five that we actually caught was well over 20 pounds, but there was no real pattern to where the fish were or what they wanted.
