Me and a couple guys from work are going to rent a boat this weekend from the marina. I haven't fished from a boat in 15 years or so, the other guys have never even fished for trout before. I have read a lot about tube jigs being the go to method if you cant troll. Do you use the same size as you would ice fishing? Are there any other techniques you guys would recommend. Are there areas of the lake we should stay away from or focus on?

I could answer yes or no and both would be right, because you didn't define what you use for ice fishing. I use 3 1/2 inch tube jigs for ice fishing at Strawberry (I will often try some smaller ones also). I use 3 1/2 inch tube jigs from my boat.
As far as location, I would head south to the Renegade area, but that is just me.

Thank you for the reply. I will have to get some bigger tube jigs, I only use I think 2" tube jigs. So, would 1/8 oz jig heads be adequate for that big a tube?

When I goto strawberry, I spend most my time vertical jigging with my ice fishing gear. I use the exact same set ups and same size if jigs. I even use my ice poles so my line is right under the transducer of my sonar. I have lots of success doing this. But no slot busters this season yet

Yes, if the hook is large enough. I make my own jig heads so I am able to put the size of hook I want to use in the jig head no matter what the weight. Feel free to send me a PM and I will share some information that you should find useful.

We did the boat rental two weeks ago from the marina and had a good time. The catching was slow for us but it was a good time. We anchored up and I would just vertical jig while my wife tossed out some power bait (she out fished me). I noticed I got a lot of small nibbles and light bites... could have been crawdads.... but I too do the same thing I do while I'm ice fishing and I've had good success that way. I use the same size of jigs, only I use a light spinning rod instead of my ice rods and jig while I set my second pole as a dead stick. PM sent

Thanks again for the replies. Sent a pm to kent. Cbass do there boats have depth finders on them? The only thing I'm worried about this whole trip is running into something shallow.

For anyone else reading... We rented the 16' pontoon, it did not have a depth finder. They have a larger size boat, not sure if that has a depth finder on it or not.

Hey natemo, I fished the berry yesterday (Wednesday) and there's a couple tips I can give you. I wouldn't fish in any deep water, try to stay in the 30 to 40 foot depth range. Mud creek, jakes bay, the ladders, the knolls, or all of indian creek are places I would target. Most of the fish we were catching were 15 to 20 feet down, and then there were a few hugging the bottom at 40 feet. If you'll be jigging I would cast out and let your jig fall for about 10 seconds so it gets down to that 15-20 ft. range and then retrieve it. I like to use a 1/4oz. head just so it casts further and falls faster. 2-3in. white tubes or curly tails tipped with chub or worm worked great. The fish were giving one quick hit and then running so you have to keep on your toes. Hope this helps. Happy Fishing!

Sometimes the little tick you feel is the only bite you get. Even big cuts will just give a tick hit.

Well the trip turned out pretty good. We arrived up at the marina around 7, we were on the water by 7:30. The lady in the marina strongly recommended we head straight east because that is where all the action was on Saturday. We stayed over there for about an hour with no bites or nibbles. We then headed to the renegade area and fished just east of the boat ramp. Ended up catching 4 fish all around 18"'. Than the wind started to get pretty bad, and there was nothing we could do to keep the boat anchored up. Around 1 we gave up and decided to head back over to the marina and get something to eat. After lunch fished in the bay next to the marina and caught a couple more fish drifting with the anchors down. All but one of the guys caught a fish so I think it was a success. Thanks for all the help making it a success especially oldcoot, kentofnsl and cbassonthefly
