Stony Creek Stonefly Search
#1
Greetings from the Clinton River Watershed Council!!! As the New Year is in
full swing, CRWC would like to invite you to the Stony Creek Stonefly
Search. This annual event samples for pre-historic looking creatures that
indicate high quality water.

Join CRWC staff and area volunteers as we play sleuth for these aquatic bugs
on Saturday, January 24th from 10 AM – 1 PM. We’ll have coffee and hot
chocolate waiting for you as we kick-off the hunt to see what is living in
our streams during these cold winter days!

The Stonefly larvae are one of the most sensitive of all aquatic
macroinvertebrates that live in our rivers and streams. These insects are
most easily found in the month of January when the water temperature is very
cold and there is still plenty of leafy debris in the river bottom for
stoneflies to forage on. These organisms require streams to be cold, clear,
and have a gravel bottom. High densities of stonefly larvae indicate high
quality water.

Please register by contact the CRWC office at 248.601.0606 or e-mail
[#0000ff]heather@crwc.org[/#0000ff]. Dress warmly, wear your waders, and bring along a friend
in search of these aquatic animals!

Directions: Meet at Stony Creek crossing at 31 Mile Road between Dequindre
and Mound Roads in Washington Township. Signs will be posted along the way.
Additional sampling sites throughout the Stony Creek subwatershed will be
visited later in the morning.

Stony Creek is a tributary to the Clinton River in eastern Oakland County
and northern Macomb County. The Stonefly Search is an ongoing educational
effort being conducted as part of the recently published Stony Creek
subwatershed management plan. The plan is available to download at
