Penn Reel Maintenance
#1
Have a problem with one of my Penn Reels, a 6/0 Senator. The large screw that holds the handle on is too tight and I do not have a tool to get it off. Needs to come off to do some maintenance work. Anyone know of a tool for these or have a suggestion?

Bart Waldo
Vista Communications
http://www.vistatel.com

Hello bartmanaz, No tools but a possable solution. I have found that when I think the screw is too tight, alot of the time it has revers threds. Try turning it the other direction. Hope it helps!

Texas gulf cost fisher.

Wish that were the case but it's not. Have other reels with same setup and threads so we know it is being turned the right way. Anybody have any experience with this Gator Grip socket?
Thanx

Bart

Bart Waldo
Vista Communications
http://www.vistatel.com

Never seen the reel you are speaking of but as a retired machinist it is not the first time that I have had to make a tool for something.

My first question is this socket a hex hole with a pin sticking up in the middle of the hole? If not can you describe it to me. If it is you’re in luck because those Allen wrenches are drillable, I have had to do this on once my self.

http://myweb.ecomplanet.com/MESS6438/
Lookie See what the kids are up to.
Dave T. Dave
First I solved the problem. After wandering thru Sears, Ace hardware and a bike shop I bought a Gator Grip socket at Target and popped that bolt right out. I don't usually buy the screaming TV ads but this is one product that seems to live up to the hype.

The bolt is a very odd shape with small semi circle indentations in the outer edge. Tried 12 point sockets in metric and english and none seem to fit. Penn actually makes a tool for this but I've not been able to find one. The Gator Grip did the trick.
Thanx

Bart Waldo
Vista Communications
http://www.vistatel.com

Glad to hear you got it.

I havent herd of that tool so I will have to be on my way to target to get a look see.

some times I have found that I have Had to make my own tools because the ones I need aer not available to the public,
in another case that I had on a home repair My new 1990 (then) pickup truck needed a new clutch and I was trying to take off the cross member from under the trans and found every nut was a diferent size standard of metric and english.

on that one I cut every bolt with a torch and replaced with standard fraction bolts.

some times on light parts like your reel you can take a socket and fill with braising and hone it out with a drimil grinder.

after getting past that problem did you find what the hangup was? i'd bee interested in hearing about it for future reff.

I like to mess around with them in my spair time take them apart clean them and see what makes them tick.

http://myweb.ecomplanet.com/MESS6438/
Lookie See what the kids are up to.
Dave T. Hi

Interestingly the problem was that the nut was on too tight. This is a large star drag reel and the handle fits on top of the star drag. When the reel was last serviced, the primary nut was screwed on too tight and then it has a tiny bolt to the side that holds that nut in place. The whole thing was tightened to the point that I had less than one revolution on the star drag. When i got it apart and cleaned and relubed i replace the nut to finger tight, put the locking bolt in place and now the drag can be freely adjusted.

This reel is an important part of our spread. We fish the Sea of Cortez out of San Carlos Sonora Mexico. This reel is our shotgun or WWB (way way back) rig that we pull from a rod holder on our radar arch. We load this reel with 50# dacron to reduce stretch since the jig on this rig is 150-200' behind the boat when we put it out. We also pull two jigs from transom flat lines and two more on the outriggers for a total of 5 lures in the spread. The shotgun has picked up a lot of fish for us and the big dorado especially like to nail it. The spread is simple and effective and only takes a one or two to manage the whole thing. That's important in a smaller boat when the action gets hot.

Sort of a long winded answer to your question but know you don't get to do much of this type of fishing in Michigan-I was born and raised there :-)

Bart Waldo
Vista Communications
http://www.vistatel.com

Thanks for the detailed report on this reel as we all learn from them. Glad to see you got your problem taken care of. I must apologise as I have one of those gater grip sockets that I recieved as a present. And I never used it. I will from now on. It sounds and looks like it is one of the items that does live up to the hype. I thought it was a gag gift but not any more. Let us hear about your next trip. I will be looking for it.

Texas gulf cost fisher.

G'day Bart and how you doing?

Long time no speak. Glad to hear you got that screw out. I was about to suggest that it might need to be drilled out, but it sounds like that TV special did the job for you.

When are you fishing Cortez next? We are heading off in several different directions this year. Back to Samoa for their tourny, then across to NZ to chase some 4X yellowtail.

Speaking of reels, have you seen the new Avet's? The current model is about the size of a TLD 15 and the sweetist free spool I have ever seen. Sings like a bird and they tell me that a 6/0 sized version will be available later this year. Several gear ratio's including an 8:0:1, plus drag pressure to stop a truck.

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve B
Mod-Lures/Baits & Oz Boards
http://www.demonjigs.com
