What has become a New Year's Day tradition, some friends and I it strawberry. We arrived early and got on the ice before sunrise. We stopped periodically to check thickness to make sure the wheelers would be ok. We had gone up on 12-28 and were on between 3-4". Today we found 6-8" for most of the drive out and when we heard the ice crack loudly, we checked and were on about 5". We stopped and walked a bit further and soon found 3". The ice went from 8" to 3" in about 100 yards so please be mi drip of that and don't assume that reports of 8" is lakeside. We got set up and the catching began. The wind was pretty unbearable and so the tent went up and we could see the bottom in about 10-15' of water. Fish were coming through about half way down. White was the color of choice and in back to back trips a me shed of our group landed a spot buster and many small bows. My friend caught his slot buster and upon further inspection we found a mostly digested 10-12" rainbow in his mouth. This is the second time this same friend has caught a cutt that had a fish in his mouth. The four of us ended with a combined 28 fish in about 6 hrs of fishing, enough to keep it interesting. A great day to start 2016.
