WHAT! Those aren't perch! Those are bass....with perch colored tattoos!!!
Did these perch come from the cooling pond of a nuclear reactor??? I once caught a perch at Hyrum that was 2.14 .....but that was inches...not pounds.[] Would you be willing to send a poor guy some info in a PM? Not asking for GPS coordinates...just looking for name of a lake or general vicinity. Some guys might even settle for info such as to what state....region....heck even what hemisphere these were caught in because I've definitely never seen perch like that in the waters I fish. Thanks for the awesome post and impressive pics!!! [signature]

Curt you headed up with them? I'm assuming Gary and the K2 crew are going, they have a great annual trip and it's fun to see what they can do... Best of luck to all of you... Later J

No, I was invited but that's too far for me to go, just to catch perch. Since my son lives up near Boise, I've made the trip up there in the Summer but its less than two hours or so from his house. If it ever works out, I'm hoping to go up there with my boat and fish there and a couple of other lakes. Perch can be caught all year round but they get pretty big this time of the year, before they spawn.

It is a long trip, but would be fun if you had time to go play. Well maybe Bear Lake or Porcupine then. Later J

The time isn't the issue it's the $500 + or - for the cost of the trip that I can't justify.[]

Ouch why so much? Yup that's more pain than I could endure as well. I prefer the $20 trips. Later J

Well, let me break it down. Its around 400 miles one way, 800 round trip. At 10 MPG pulling a trailer thats between $160- $240, if you get fuel for $2 to $3 a gallon. If you are going that far, you are not going to spend just 1 day, so lets say 3 to 4 days lodging at $65 to $110 a night. The cheaper rate would be $195 for 3 night to $260 for 4 nights. The more expensive rate would be $330 to $440. Then there is gas for you ATV or snowmobile and of course food. Maybe you can save some $$ if you bring your own food but your likely going to eat out once or twice in that many days. I guess you can see how it can add up. Fishing isn't cheap when your going that far but for a chance to catch a 2 lb perch, it could be worth it I guess. [:/]

Yup that really adds up fast, even with cheaper gas this year. I think I find it more convenient to not count costs or I'd probably never go. Maybe that's why I've been over spending so much lately. I think the summer is worse when you're putting gas in the boat too. The lower fuel costs have made the Bear Lake trip a little friendlier though. I can do it on $20-$25 now. I think those long distance trip costs is why I gave up on the yearly Henry's trip. It was getting pretty expensive and the fish seemed to be getting smaller. Well thanks for the break down. Later J

Hmm that kind of trip makes me want to use my new travel trailer and toon/tubes.something to checkout for the summer.[]

A heads up to those lucky folks headed to Cascade on Wednesday or Thursday. The weather forecast is calling for a good amount of snow on Wednesday. The road from Boise up to Cascade, in the Payette River Canyon, is a challenge if it's snowpacked and icy. Be prepared for winter driving, especially if you're towing a trailer as many of you are.
Be safe and have fun. I wish I had been able to join you guys and gals. Mike [signature] |
